Just a Few Favorites
I like to think that because reading has been such a big part of my life, that it has also made me a better writer. Like, maybe I've absorbed a little about characterization or plotting or story rhythm from the books I've read.
These are three of my favorite authors, writers whose books I come back to time after time...and who always manage to sweep me away from my overstuffed chair in my cozy living room...
3. Louisa May Alcott: You thought she only wrote Little Women? My dears, my dears...there are more books, of course there are more, but Little Women is, in fact, my favorite of her books. Little Men? Of course it was a fun read, and Jo's Boys gave me a glimpse of life post-Women...but Jo and Meg, Amy and Beth were so...real in so very many ways. The way she drew her characters made them come alive, and that made them a part of me. Just a little bit.
2. Jayne Ann Krentz: Just the Jayne Ann books. I know, I know, she has several pseudonyms, and I love them all, but the Jayne books are my absolute favorites. She has a way with characterization that blows me away. These are books that I can sink into and get really lost...and after a few days of being stranded on that desert island, I'm going to need some civilization to escape into.
1. Anne Rivers Siddons: Anne writes with amazing emotion; she has this ability to draw me into a story so much that, even after I've finished the book, the characters are still alive for me. Sometimes a year or two later I'll wonder 'what is ___ doing now?' and I always hope that maybe she'll release a sequel to my absolute favorites...even a short story.
I have a lot more favorite authors, too many to list here. What about you? Who are some of your favorite authors?
