Last Friday, for Read Across America Day, I read to my sister's fourth
grade class and to my nephew's third grade class. I love going into the
elementary school and seeing the kids and miss when I used to volunteer
at the school library for my kids and read to them and their classmates.
Read Across America Day is an observance in the US held on the school day closest to Dr. Suess's birthday. We had quite a few books by Dr. Suess at our house when I was a kid. Here are some of my favorites:
Dr. Suess's Sleep Book
Yertle the Turtle
The Sneetches
And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street
Some more recent favorites are:
Daisy Head Mayzie
Oh, the Places You'll Go!
That last one is especially meaningful as my older daughter prepares to graduate high school in three short months :-)
Did you read Dr. Suess books when you were growing up? Did you read them to your kids? Which are your favorites?

I read his books when I was small,
I read the one. I read them all.
I also read them to my kids.
He sometimes made them flip their lids!
My favorite? Oh, I'd go with Sam.
I still can quote Green Eggs and Ham:-)
Pam, I love it! How clever you are.
My favorite has to be Horton Hears a Who!
Pamela, what fun!!!
Beth, my daughter loved Oh, the Places You'll Go! because it had her last name at the end of the book (where Dr. Seuss listed a few surnames). She thought that was pretty special.
Read Across America Day is a fabulous idea!
My favorite Dr. Seuss book is The Eye book. It was the first book I learned to read. My daughter loved all of her Dr. Seuss books. Some of her favorites were The Ear Book, The Foot Book and Green Eggs and Ham
The only thing better than reading to kids, is listening to them read. Especially when they are first becoming confident at it.
My oldest loved Hand, Hand Fingers Thumb. I could probably still recite the whole book, but I don't want to have to worry about copyright:)He also like the one about a pair of pale green pants.
Lol, Pamela!
I love Dr. Seuss. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is my favorite character. Green Eggs and Ham the favorite book.
Beth, the school trip sounds like fun. Maybe good research for someday, too. :-)
LOL, Pamela! That is so fabulous! You are definitely channeling Dr. Suess today ;-)
Hey, Rogenna. We had Horton Hears a Who. Actually, writing this blog helped me remember quite a few of the books I'd forgotten *g*

Mary, that is so cool!!
Read Across America Day is so much fun and the kids really seem to enjoy it *g* This year they all wore hats to celebrate.
Tammy, those are all great! I clearly remember them all, too! I'll have to see if my mom still has them in her bookcase *g*
Kristina, Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb is yet another one I'd forgotten about! Loved it *g*
Cathryn, my sister is actually helping me with some research for my current WIP which features a heroine who teaches second grade *g* I did quite a bit of snooping around when I was both her and my nephew's classrooms!
Pam!!! So awesome!
The Grinch is my favorite, hands down. Though I have often found that when I'm really frustrated/ticked off, a dramatic reading the Green Eggs & Ham will do wonders for venting. And does anyone else remember Jesse Jackson reading that on SNL years (decades?) ago? Loved it!
YES YES YES, we read Dr. Suess books:) I liked one fish two fish, "Sam I am" in Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who, the cat in the hat and many more. the Lorax was a pretty heavy book for little guys, but as my little guy got older, he got into it! So many fun books!
Kris, I missed that bit on SNL. I'll have to look it up on YouTube *g*
Hey, Snookie! Love that some of Dr. Suess's books have deeper meanings which was why The Sneetches was always one of my favorites :-)
I did not read Dr. Suess when I was young and I don't have kids of my own. However I have read Dr. Suess to numerous nieces, nephews, kids I babysat for and now great nieces and nephews. Hopefully I'll still be around to read to their kids.
We looked after my brother's four kids for six weeks once. His youngest son had to have One Fish, Two Fish read to him almost constantly. My husband finally hid the book. We tried to get him interested in another book but after about twenty minutes gave it up and "found" the book. My nephew was about 2 at the time and he could tell if you missed a page.
“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
- Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"
I read them to both of my daughters and now I read them to my grandkids. The kids like There's A Wocket In My Pocket. I'm more of a Berenstein Bear book fan.
Yes, I read them as a child and read them to my child. My favorite is How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which is also, unsurprisingly, one of my favorite holiday movies every year. I love it!
I certainly read them to my children & then they would read them to me.
LOL, Kaelee! Love that your nephew "found" the book. My son loved The Berenstain Bears so we read those over and over again :-)
Linda, I didn't even read your comment before I responded to Kaelee about my son and his love of the Berenstain Bears. My kids were never crazy about the Dr. Suess books either *g*
That's a popular choice, JV!
Mary, I loved when my kids wanted to read to me!
