Nothing takes me back to a certain time and/or place quicker than a song. When I hear Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl", I'm whisked back to when I was 10 and would sing and dance along with cutie Rick, using a hairbrush as a microphone *g*
"Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister takes me back to Junior High School and my first real heartbreak. Even though it's been many (and I mean MANY) years since I was 14, hearing this song still gets me melancholy!
High School was all about AC/DC ("Highway To Hell" reminds me of driving around in my little red Ford Escort, although we weren't going to hell, just the mall *g*) Bon Jovi ("Living On A Prayer" brings back memories of big hair, ripped jeans and good friends) and Def Leppard ("Pour Some Sugar On Me" brings back those memories of MTV when they still played videos)
But the songs that mean the most to me are the ones my husband and I consider "ours". You know, the songs that mean something to us as a couple.
U2's "With Or Without You" was the first song we ever danced to.
Cheap Trick's "The Flame" was the song we considered "our song" while we were dating
The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" was the song we danced to at our wedding. Songs played during the reception included: "When I See You Smile" by Bad English, "The Rose" (Bette Midler) and "When I'm With You" (Sheriff)
Jeez. Can you tell this was the early nineties?? Holy rock ballads, Batman!
Ahem...anyway...whenever I hear any of those songs, I'm transported right back to that day (at least in my head *g*) Everything I felt at the time comes rushing back: excitement, nerves, hope and lots of love.
Do you and your significant other have a song? One you consider 'yours'? Any songs take you back to a specific event in your life? And just for fun, any song you'd prefer to never hear again? (For me it's "Hotel California" *g*)

I could gladly go forever without hearing Hotel California, Seasons in the Sun, Claire, and anything by Tim McGraw (except A Real Good Man.)
Takin' Care of Business always reminds me of dancing at weddings with my sisters and cousins. And believe it or not, the Chicken Dance always takes me back to my wedding, because that was the very first time I heard it. I know. THe ultimate in romance.
Our song is "Forever and Ever, Amen." By Randy Travis. WE danced to it at our wedding, of course. But now we like to dance to "Play That Funky Music, White Boy."
We start every vacation with "Cheeseburger in Paradise." By Jimmy Buffett. We listen to the whole album of SONGS YOU KNOW BY HEART. Have since our honeymoon. WE also punctuate our vacation dvds with music from Tom Petty's WILDFLOWERS. The Eagles, including "Hotel California" and Dave Matthews Band.
Our elementary school does the Chicken Dance on the last day of school. I will find out if it is possible to Chicken Dance and bawl at the same time when my youngest has his last last day of school this year.
Kris, love that the Chicken Dance reminds you of your wedding! That must tickle your kids *g*
The song that reminds me of weddings is We Are Family. It's played at every wedding reception in my husband's family (and with six siblings, 20 nieces and nephews and 30+ great-nieces and nephews, there are A LOT of weddings *g*)
Kristina, I love Tom Petty - never get tired of any of his songs *g* It's funny, too, because of his long career, his songs bring back memories from just about every time of my life.
I will find out if it is possible to Chicken Dance and bawl at the same time when my youngest has his last last day of school this year.
I'm guessing it is! It's such a bittersweet time, isn't it? My older daughter graduates this June and for the past two years, my younger daughter and I have cried every time we hear Pomp and Circumstance :-)
Hi Beth! Good songs. My hubby and I have two songs. God Must Have Spent A Little More Time on You by NSYNC was the song playing on the radio when we kissed for the first time and it was also our first dance song at our wedding. And now the song that we call ours is Bless The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts.
I also have a song for each of my kids that came out the year they were born. My oldest Son is I Hope You Dance by Leanne Womack, which was always fitting but became more so when he was diagnosed with Autism at the age of three. My daughter's song is In My Daughter's Eyes by Martina McBride. And my youngest son's song is My Wish by Rascal Flatts. They are all fitting songs for my monsters, lol!
I also have to agree with you that a song can bring up a memory good or bad from years ago. I have many songs that do that to me every day.
Have a wonderful day!
Considering my husband doesn't dance a lot we don't really have a song for dancing to. I can maybe get him up to dance to Unchained Melody or some other slow song but he has to be feeling happy first.
On another level Girls Just Want to have Fun is a real favorite song.
Hey, Alina!
Love that you have songs for each of your kids. There are definitely songs that remind me of my kids - Anything by the band Rush (my son has been their biggest fan since he was 2) reminds me of my boy. There are also the songs they couldn't get enough of such as "Tub Thumping" by Chumbawamba *g* I can still see them rocking out to that in my living room!
Kaelee, I have many fond memories of Girls Just Want to Have Fun! I love her music *g*
We like music, but have none that are "our" song. There are songs that I hear and take me back to a place in time. Some are happy, some are melancholy, some are sad, but for the most part they take me to happy places in my childhood (way too long ago) and at different points in my life!
One song I'd like to NEVER hear again is Taylor Swifts Never Getting Back Together. I'm really sick of that song. Oh and Call Me Maybe, I'm Call Me Maybe'd out.
I wish we all could be California girls... Almost the Beach Boys. This my very young daughter would sing in the dead of winter with twenty five foot snowbanks surrounding our house. She still sings her version to her hubby on rainy winter days.
