Let's Eat Cake!

This will be a fun blog post today, because I am in a mid-winter doldrums, and I need to be cheered up.  Let's discuss cake.  Do you find yourself reaching for your camera whenever somebody sets a cake onto the table?

Maybe it's just my family--we love our sweets.  But in browsing through a decade's worth of snapshots on my hard drive, I've realized that whenever we get together, more often than not, cake is involved.

First there are birthday cakes.  Many, many birthday cakes:

Raise your hand if you have a January birthday!

Baby turns one.
Nana turns 95 (but Aunt P is 100!)

We eat cake at baby showers:

Straight from Heaven Up Above, A Little Baby For Us to Love

We order cakes for special occasions:

Denise Eagan's debut book signing party!

If you go on a cruise ship vacation, the waiters will parade the cake around for you:

Baked Alaska for everyone!

We are so cute, and we like cake, too!

Now I open the floor to you. Do you like cake? What's your favorite kind? (I'm a chocolate girl, with butter cream frosting, please.)

Cathryn Parry’s latest Harlequin Superromance is December's “The Long Way Home.”  Unfortunately, no one in that story eats birthday cake, but there is wedding cake involved.   For more information, please see her website at www.CathrynParry.com.

Oh, now I'm hungry ....

I like cakes that are a bit different. Tres Leches cake, sprinkled with coconut and topped with strawberries. Coffee cakes filled to overflowing with nuts and cinnamon swirls and maybe blueberries. Oatmeal cake with a broiled sugar crunch streusel. Regular chocolate/vanilla/spice cakes are fun, but I do like those oddballs best.

I've made cakes for my kids' birthdays. My oldest son's first birthday cake was decorated to look like a baseball. For his 5th birthday, I made a pyramid (he wanted to have an Egyptian themed party). I've also made a volcano, a tank, an airport, ferry and a tie dye cake. Before you get too impressed, they were mostly lopsided, but they were fun.

My favorite cake is carrot cake.

But I've heard it said, cake is just there to hold up the frosting :) Give me a corner piece and I'm in heaven.

Kris, you had me at 'coconut'! Oh, and 'coffee cake.' Yum!

Kristina, I AM impressed! The airport cake sounds really cool. Your kids must have been thrilled!

Rogenna, I agree with you on the frosting (unfortunately, for my waistline). My nana has a killer buttercream recipe that is my weakness every time.

I like lots of cake types as long as they are moist. Carrot cake, chocolate fudge cake and spice cake are among my favorites.

My older brother has a November birthday and he always wants a dark fruit cake for his birthday cake.

Cathryn, we have lots of birthdays and, as my brother owns the local bakery, we eat lots of cake *g* I don't have a favorite but I love white cake with vanilla butter cream frosting and Milky Way cake :-)

For as long as I can remember I've had a chocolate cake for my birthday. No mater the age, you MUST have a cake for your birthday.

I love cake! My favorite is chocolate. Most any kind of chocolate, but rocky road cake is way high up on the list of chocolate cakes :)

I love cheesecake, especially strawberry or caramel. Right now I'd love to dig into one but I'm on my starvation diet( where I can't put anything in my mouth that tastes good) right now to loose some weight so cake is out of the question. Frozen greek yogurt is my only sweet I'm having right now. My 91 year old mother was worried I was starving myself frankly because of the way I word it but I assured her I was eating plenty of good for me stuff, just nothing exciting. If I make it through the month without cracking I'm going to reward myself with something small and yummy.

LOVE cake! We're celebrating DH's birthday, and instead of one big cake, we got him 10 little cakes from a local bakery--we can't decide on our favorite! Blackberry mousse? Triple chocolate? Cheesecake? Cappucino? Banana chocolate crunch bombe? Aaack! ;) Must eat them all :D
