Harlequin and The Bachelor

I've got to admit--the title made me smile.  I'm old enough to have fallen in love with all the Tammy movies (Tammy Tell Me True, Tammy and the Millionaire, Tammy and the Doctor).  My favorite was Tammy and the Bachelor.  Those movies whetted my appetite for romance, making me hungry for more.  Sure, they were a little sappy and predictable.  And I could go on about the standard plot that was basically the same in every movie--but I didn't really mean to write this blog about Tammy.

What I do want to know is if you caught the series The Bachelor this week?  If you did, you saw the bachelorettes not only vying for the affection of the bachelor, but also for the chance to be a cover model with a three-book contract  from Harlequin.  How cool is that?

The most exciting part to me was getting to go behind the scenes of a cover shoot.  I never realized how much chemistry was needed between the models to give those covers that special something that make them fit our stories so perfectly.  Some of what should've been heat turned out to be only lukewarm at best, but during some of the shoots, I swear I could hear my TV sizzle.  I know that the young woman who won the contract is a model by profession and maybe had a one-up on the others, but she and the bachelor were Hot with a capital H.  I found myself wishing they would end up on the cover of one of my books.

Aside from the Harlequin connection, I found the show to be intriguing.  Can a bachelor find true love out of a group of women hand-picked for optimal drama by studio executives?  Maybe, but he'd have a much better chance if his storyline was being written by an Harlequin SuperRomance author.  We could give him the perfect story to go with that cover.

So did you watch the episode?  What did you think?

Pamela, I've never seen The Bachelor, but really like the premise for the episode you mentioned. I would have liked to have been behind the scenes for a cover shoot.

LOL, we could totally write great storylines for The Bachelor!

I watched the first hour just so I could see the photo shoot. I realize that because it was also being filmed it probably wasn't just like a photo shoot would be. Sean isn't going to be on any covers though as the shoot was just for drama in the program. I think you can find love anywhere.

If you want a bit more information on the cover shoot go to http://harlequinblog.com/

Mary,
Although my daughters love The Bachelor, I've only watched it a few times. Too much inflicted drama:-) The cover shoot was cool, though!

Kaelee, I agree that love can be found anywhere. It, like flowers, can bloom in unexpected places. I enjoyed the behind the scenes look--even with the addirional drama:-)And I thought it was fabulous exposure for Harlequin!

Hi Pamela,

I meant to catch it and missed it. Now you have me hoping I can catch up on demand :)

Pamela,

I couldn't bring myself to watch it. Or record it. Two hours? I hate the idea of setting up these overly romantic dates and then wondering why the romance falls apart when the cameras turn off.

But, I think it is cool that Harlequin was part of what seems to be a very popular show. I've seen some of the pictures, and would be interested in watching a clip showing the photo shoot.

I've never watched the show - most of the time I don't even know how to get our TV to turn on - but I thought this was a fabulous premise & am amazed it wasn't done sooner. From what I've read, it sounds like it was a lot of fun to watch!

Nope, didn't watch it. Not even the Harlequin cover contest tempted me to watch it. I agree with Kaelee, love can be found anywhere, but these reality shows seem to exagerate the "bad" qualities of the people involved. Seems that a lot of it is contrived. I'm sure the producers/camera people are catching the "bad" more than the "good" qualities of the people involved because that's what people like to watch so it sells. I'd much rather see the good in people. I just can't get into those shows. I can see a super written using this premise. If fact I know I've read a harlequin (not sure what line it was) where there was a similar premise used. As I recall the hero was the producer of the show though...

Ro, I'm sure it will be available on Hulu. I'll be interested in hearing what you think!

Kristina,
The cover shoot was the best part. The overdone drama was to be expected, I suppose. If all the women got along, there wouldn't be any conflict in the mix. And we all know how important conflict is to a story!

I hear you, Kris. It now takes 4 remotes to watch our TV. I would have missed it if I hadn't told my husband ahead of time that I wanted to watch it. And it must me a chick-show because he groaned all the way through it!

Snookie, they absolutely try to show the worst of the characters on the show. I just sort of thought of it like a book. There's got to be conflict and we're always told not to make our characters perfect. Drama sells!

I didn't watch it. I do like Sean and I hope he finds a good woman. The previews had so many cat fights, I decided not to watch it.

I was named after the Tammy song from Tammy and the Bachelor. I have watched The Bachelor since the first one, but it has made me pretty cynical. Only 3 couples ever got married and I am counting Jason and Molly

I haven't watched the Bachelor, Pamela--I watch very little TV these days! My TBR is way too big and I need as much time as I can set aside for reading ;)
