Birthday Dinner

Last night we had my older daughter's birthday dinner to celebrate her turning 18 (Yes, 18. No, I'm not handling it well <g>) so today I have birthdays on my mind. One of my favorite things about birthdays has always been (and, oh, dear God, please let it always be) birthday cake! But before cake, there is that sacred tradition (at least in my family) of the Birthday Dinner.

Here are my family’s favorites:

Husband – dinner is always roasted chicken and vegetables (potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, turnips, parsnips and rutabagas) and crescent rolls. Birthday cake – plain cheesecake. No fruit. No chocolate. No nuts. No nothing *g*

Son – dinner varies with this one. It’s either steak roll ups (thinly sliced steak rolled around stuffing and cooked in a beef/mushroom gravy) mashed potatoes, crescent rolls and fresh green beans. Or pigs in a blanket which are really more like stuffed cabbage – ground beef and rice rolled in cabbage, fried then baked in beef broth. Cake is either pumpkin crunch or pumpkin pie.

Older daughter – I never know what she’s going to want. She has too many favorites to pick just one. Last night's dinner was stuffed shells (ricotta, mozzarella and spinach) and, for the first time ever, she didn't choose cheesecake with cherry topping for her cake but cherry clafoutis which is a French dessert somewhere between a pudding and souffle.

Younger daughter – spaghetti and meatballs. Always. *g* Her cake varies, though. Last year’s was a swiss chocolate roll cake with vanilla cream filling.

What’s your favorite birthday dinner? What do you like for your birthday cake?

I usually eat spinach and ricotta lasagna. As a birtday cake well, that's gotta be chocolate. I got a great recipe from a French lady who lived next door many years ago and it's to die for.

We don't have a specific birthday dinner for each of us. We do try to go out on the actual day, though. I do always make my kids' cakes, though. But I seemed to have forgotten how to frost them. My tie dye cupcakes for my youngest son's 10th birthday party didn't turn out too well. For some reason, the frosting gets too stiff (I make it with butter, so maybe that's my problem?) and it pulled the tops of the cupcakes off.

The kids ate them, so it wasn't a total fail.

Hi, Jo's Daughter! I did make a chocolate cake as well since I wasn't sure how the cherry dessert would turn out. I have a recipe from Ina Garten that we love but last night's was an easy bundt cake: cake mix, pudding mix, milk, eggs and vegetable oil *g*

Hey, Kristina! I'm sure the cupcakes and frosting were still delicious *g*

I like roast with potatoes, onions and carrots with a big cheesecake of any type for dessert.

Hi Beth,

I like your older daughter's dinner and your younger daughter's cake!

Many people in my family have Texas Sheet Cake as their traditional cake. I brought my husband to "meet the family" over that cake for my sister's birthday one year so it's doubly beloved by us!

When I was little I was a very picky eater so choosing my birthday dinner was heaven. It was the one night of the year when I was guaranteed to like everything on my plate!

Happy Birthday to your daughter!

Linda, your birthday dinner sounds yummy! I didn't use to like cheesecake but I've come around :-)

Thanks, Ellen, she had a nice birthday.

My husband's family loves Texas sheet cake! I make Ree Drummond's Milky Way Cake which is similar and soooo good. It's so rich I only make it during the holidays ;-)

We usually have teriyaki beef on the grill or baked ham, with potato salad, rice, baked beans and some kind of vegies (usually cucumbers and carrots sliced and marinated in vinegar, sugar and salt (sort of like namasu). My favorite cake is chocolate :) Any kind of chocolate with rocky road ice cream!

The past few years we've gone out for Chinese. Then come home for chocolate mud cake for a birthday cake dessert.

Mine - usually red beans and rice with andouille sausage and cornbread.

But my stomach has not been liking that dinner lately, so if I had to pick I'd say chicken fried steak with rice and cream gravy, purple hull peas with cornbread. For dessert either chocolate cake or strawberry shortcake.

Yeah, nothing remotely good for me...but, man, can my momma cook that up good :)
