You hear that phrase a lot. A Little Something Extra. It's an attention getter. And oftentimes a disappointment, too. It's a sales pitch. An empty promise. And sometimes, it's just exactly what it says, a little something extra.
We're drawn to the promise. It's part of the human condition. We all want just a little bit more. More than we paid for. More than we expected. Just one more little bite of the chocolate cake we splurged on. One more day of vacation. A coupon for a free meal when we pay the exorbitant cost of a Disneyland ticket. And because this is such a globally understood characteristic of the human being, people prey on it to get us to do what they want. Buy what they want. Give what they want.
Look at Clinique make-up. I wear it because of its dermatological promises. And because those promises are true. For me at least. The make-up has stood the test of time. But do I just go buy it when I need it? Of course not. Anytime I can, I wait for the Clinique bonus because then, when I buy my regular make-up I get a little something extra. Six little something extras. And here's weird part of this concept. With very few exceptions I have never received, in my bonus gift, anything that I use, would use, or have ever used. We moved recently and I ended up giving away pounds and pounds of unopened Clinique bonus gifts. I had two dresser drawers full of the stuff. But, guess what? I need make-up again. And I waited to buy it, because this week is Clinique bonus week at Macy's. So here I go again...
Don't worry, though, the little something extra I have to offer here is NOT make-up. I've got three little something extras:
1. A Daughter's Story just hit the stands along with five other fabulous Superromance Novels! But wait, that's the make-up, not the bonus. A Daughter's story is part of my Comfort Cove series - a series that revolves around a twenty-five year old cold case involving a missing toddler. A Daughter's Story is the story of the sister whose life was irrevocably changed the day her little sister went missing. The first book in the series, A Son's Tale, was out in July and is the story of the son of the man accused of taking the toddler. The third book, The Truth About Comfort Cove, is the story of the detectives who are working the case. That's all 'make-up'. Now for the bonus - The Good Girl - a Comfort Cove novella - is coming out in December of this year and is COMPLETELY FREE to everyone everywhere. Period. Harlequin and I have teemed up to bring you this little Comfort Cove bonus because we believe in this series so much. We believe that you'll be as satisfied as I am with my Clinique make-up. (I think more so!)
2. The Truth About Comfort Cove offers a little extra, as well. Or a lot extra. In January of this year, Harlequin is re-launching Superromance with longer books, a bigger feel, savvy covers. The books are bigger books, twenty-five percent longer, with more depth than ever before. The Truth About Comfort Cove - directly following the free novella - is one of the six books launching the whole new us!
3. If we have ten or more commenters today, I will give away, to one commenter a free copy of A Son's Tale to get you started on the series.

It's certainly the way of the world. They hike up prices, but reel us in with promises of free extras.
I'll take your extras over any others any time thank you.
I'm right there with you getting the bonus items at the make up counter. But I can boast that I used one item ONCE.
Good luck with the series it sounds fabulous.
I'm hooked on the "little something extra" hype too. Most times I end up with something I don't want or can't use!
I love SuperRomance line, but, unfortunately, these books aren't available in Italian, therefore I try to read the most intriguing ones in English. I'm slow, but a little sacrifice is totally worth it :)
Comfort Cove series sounds very interesting. I like the fact that all the books are connected & show how this crime affected different people.
I've actually found some lipsticks in the bonus that I will wear...oh and the samples of the eye cream.
In Louisiana we call "A little something extra" lagnaippe. And often at restaurants, they make sure you get something extra :) And usually it's good.
Congrats on the series...and being one of the authors to kick off our new look and length :)
I'm really looking forward to the new length. Congrats on being one of the first to bring us that something extra.
A few years ago, my boss sent the whole office to a resort in British Columbia. We reserved the "Family Suite" since we were taking our two boys and it had bunk beds. When we arrived, they told us they'd over booked and had to set us up in the two room suite overlooking the water. It was gorgeous. The master bedroom was huge and the boys had murphy beds that they thought were the coolest ever. We had a kitchen, and dining room and the spectacular view.
It was a lot something extra.
I like a little something extra and I love your books, Tara.
I bet you made someone happy with giving them your extras!
I would love a copy of A Son's Tale!! I just started the Reader Service to get all 6 each month and have A Daughter's Story. Be really cool to start at the beginning.

I love the cover of "A Daughter's Story". Sounds like an interesting series.
My girlfriends and I like to share our freebies with each other. One girlfriend gets stuff from street vendors on her way home from work. Another gets time-share supplies. I find things on the Internet that are free. We often put these things together (especially the shampoos and toothpaste samples) for a local women's shelter.
Wow you all have been busy!!
I posted this morning, but see that it didn't go through.
Mary,
Thanks for the vote of confidence!!
Scarlet,
I have no idea why I'm so addicted to the little make-up freebies, but I love having it. Makes me feel bountiful!
Snookie,
Your name gets me every time. We have a daughter who is hooked on Jersey shore and your name is a household name around here!
Natalija,
I had no idea we weren't in Italian! I'm going to ask about it. Italy is one of my favorite places in the world.
Liz,
I can't wear the light colors with my fair skin. I need darks and the only darks that come free are brown. Not good for me, either.
Kristina,
Sounds like a glorious vacation. I feel gifted just hearing about it because it's good to know that things like that really do happen.
Tammy,
Good to see you here!!
Marcie,
We're giving away the free book because we hit ten comments! Your name is in the hat!
BW,
Thank you! I think it's my favorite cover of all of my books. Prior to that it was Four Times the Trouble which was out in May. HQ is really shining on covers lately!!
I also just saw The Truth About Comfort Cove cover this week. It comes in second to A Daughter's Story, but just barely.
Laney,
Good to see you! And it does my heart good to hear that you donate to women's shelters, too. The people who run shelters are always on shoestring budgets and can only do what they have the means to do.

Ha ha!!
It didn't publish this morning and now I publish twice.
I'm revision crazy at the moment...
Working furiously on two Shelter Valley books at the same time. Both due this month.
I guess the fact I’m allergic to pretty much everything makes it easier for me to ignore a lot of those “extras”! Fancy beauty products sound great… until I break out in a rash! (There’s a good chance it’s because of my father’s exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam.)
I’m going to put in a huge Book Depository order for Supers today – I’m so far behind on reading them and they’re my favourites when it comes to category romance. So much reading to do…
ANNOUNCING THE WINNER!!!
Snookie! You won a copy of The Son's Tale!
To receive your gift, please send your snail mail address to staff@tarataylorquinn.com!!
