Do you sleep in a den or on a lily pad?
Since this blog is from and by SuperRomance authors (and editors), I thought we
should discuss the something we've never discussed. The bedroom! Our blog labels go from "BEA12" and
"beauty pageant" to "beefcake" and "beets". I do
apologize for the beets. Now I'm going to apologize again. I am sorry, but I
have to keep it G-rated. So we're not going to discuss what
goes on in the bedroom, but the room itself.

(Note: None of these is the bedroom of my friend or myself--though all of them have considerable merit.)A friend of mine built a new house with a lily pad for a bedroom. That is to say, it's as bright as a lily pad in the middle of a pond on a sunny day. It has light carpeting, walls and bedding, and an entire wall of luscious windows. In the day it's so bright and beautiful. A lily pad.
I have a bedroom that is dark and den-like. The floor is dark, the bedding is dark, the drapes and wall hangings are dark. At night it feels, well, so dark and cozy, so safe and snug. A den.
The interesting thing is we like it that way.
My friend loves her lily pad and I love my den and neither of us would
change to the
other. So here is the challenge for the day. Look at all these wonderful bedrooms. Don't look for yours, but use your wishing hat and look at them again.
Now, pick a bedroom. To make it easy peasy imagine:
--if you had to chose one of these 4,
--if it was being given to you for free,
--if no one at all would pick on you about it--ever--in fact
they would compliment you on it.
Which of these would you chose?
Or simply, is yours a lily pad or a den?
To a commenter, I'll give a choice of one of my books or a set of TossOn™ bracelets.
Thank you so much for playing and I like your choice already!

I'd pick the last one. It looks light & airy & fresh. I guess I'm more lily pad then den.
Though I like number two, I'd probably go with number four. It's dreamy and I think I would enjoy it longer than the green walls of the second bedroom.
It's got to be number two. The two darker ones kind of creep me out and me and a completely white room????Never a good idea. I'll stick with number 2!
I'd choose #3 with better overhead lighting, as I like the curtains to block out the sunlight and I love brown tones. Very relaxing for me. I do agree, though, that it is too dark the way it is now.
Definitely number 4. Who couldn't feel upbeat waking up in such a bright, fresh room?
If I didn't consider my sleeping habits, I'd chose #4. The room looks so refreshing. But #3 is closer to how I like my bedrooms. Dark and relaxing. I'd get rid of that picture on the wall, though!
I think I'd pick #4. Though there are elements to #2 that I like, just not the hanging bed, the wall color (though you'll find that exact shade of green in my home) and didn't like the clock either.
But I guess by my choices I'm a lily pad lover.
Looks like I'm in agreement with most everyone - #4. Boy is that room going to be crowded!
I do like the clock in #2 - I wouldn't have to squint to see what time it is!

Wonderful game, Mary! I would choose bedroom number 2 ONLY because of that enormous clock. I love oversized clocks and that one fits the bill ;-)
Without the clock, I would choose number 4. It's light and airy and feminine.
Why have we never discussed bedrooms before???
A fun post, Mary! I like the elegance of #1, but I'd hate to have to do all that dusting. :-) I'm going to go with #3. Just looking at it makes me sleepy. My fantasy is to hire an interior decorator, but even if I had the money I probably wouldn't end up doing it--I like to look at pretty pictures, but in the end all I'm looking for in household furnishings is that they be serviceable--and as few in number as possible. :-)
@Marcie--LOL!
Marybelle,
The last one is so lovely. The double doors are a nice touch. Open, they must give the room the feeling of being roomy and closed, cozy. Maybe questions for another blog: Do we give enough attention to our bedrooms where we go at the end of every day? and Do we fail to fix them up because we can close the door when company comes?
Jo' Daughter,
The waking up in number 1 does have an appeal. Maybe having someone bring us breakfast in bed...
Scarlet,
Number two just caught my eye. It's fun and delightfully in your face. Imagine if you came home one day and someone had sneaked in and redid your bedroom in that style...
Laney,
It is a bit dark with the lighting they have. May be a product of doing a "dark bedroom" search. It is warm and brown and cocoonie. A lovely den!
I really love number 2, but I gotta go with number 4. Clean, airy and inviting. My current bedroom is more den-ish if only because my hubbie prefers it dim. My colors are light even if the drapes stay pulled. Guess I'm a lily-pad kinda gal. Loves lots of light - open all the blinds every day :)
TxDee,
My only problem with number four is when dawn starts around 4:30. Though the early morning is a lovely time, late at night is so very alluring to me.
Kate,
LOL, the picture. I did a double take when I saw it. I know, I know to all those who accept and love fine art in all its interesting forms, but... Yeeooow. However, the room is from a hotel in Amsterdam...
Rogenna,
#4 is seductive, even to a den dweller. Maybe one of the attractions of #4 is that it is a small room and almost any of us could have something similar. I might have to go buy some paint and drapes, rugs, bedspread...
Marcie,
You're so funny! Thanks for the chuckles. That clock is a hoot--if it lights up, that's a deal breaker though.
Mary,
Maybe we haven't discussed them because we all spend our nights there and then some of our days and we're tired of them--naaaw! It didn't occur to me until I started thinking about the den and lily pad that's we'd not done a bedroom discussion--and most of us have them.
Now that leads me to think of discussions of other things most of us have, but...I'm going to leave some of those to other Super Authors.
Kathy,
I have to say, #1 has a great allure to me, too. Maybe I should have thrown a cleaning service with the disclaimers.
LOL! Serviceable and few in number--that principle has finally sunk in--and yet--too many dust collectors still find themselves into my house and life.
Liz,
Ah, the husband factor. Maybe we should have separate bedrooms the way they did in the past. Not that I'm advocating sleeping in separate rooms. We could have a room the way each of us likes. Most of us wives would have the ways and means to lure the hubby to any bedroom we choose, and later we could walk away when the zzzzzz's get too persistent.
I'd probably pick #1 partially because it looks old-fashioned which I love, but also because it shows the best of both worlds. During the day, I prefer my bedroom to be light and airy. At night, however, I like my bedroom to be dark as a den with no light creeping in.
Sandy has to go to #4. I like the open, spacial look and the nonjudgemental neutralness of the room. It would let me use essential oils to set the warm & cozy tone or the cool & calm tone. My sleep mask can get me the cozy feel in the early morning if I want or I can bask in the early reflected light. In my life I appreciate all of the moods when I want them.
i like #1 dark &spooky come on in
3
Love the last bedroom not too loud but more calm/neural. Add alittle more of color will be great! Mix of old fashion to modern style! :-D
I could never live in bedroom number 4. Even though she's not allowed in the bedroom, I'd still have black lab hair all over that white bedspread. I like #3 the best, but I would add some more color, maybe a deep red.
And I have to admit, since building my headboard 8 years ago, I rarely think about my bedroom decor. It's the room that gets everything shoved into it when company comes unexpectantly. I tried to put a writing table in there, but it's become a laundry waystation.
I would pick Number 4. It is so bright and the most homey.
I would love number 1 I love love it!
Wonderful blog! thanks
Penney
Molly,
#1 is so much fun. It would be fun to spend at least one night in a room like that--maybe several! Den darkness for sleep is my favorite, so when my husband is out of town, I throw a pillow over his lights-up-the-whole-village alarm clock.
Sandy,
A sleep mask is something I've considered trying when I'm not at home--and maybe at home if hubby gets a brighter alarm clock. Appreciating all one's moods is so Zen!
Gail,
Dark and spookie! Spiders and bats and goblins, oh my!
Mixing old fashioned and modern is so much fun. Makes it easy to have all your favorites surrounding you.
Kristina,
...it's become a laundry waystation. Haha, er...I mean...oh, no! I know how that its. Every moderately large flat surface is game for laundry and mail. Adding red to room #3 makes me think of old time movie stars...please don't ask my why, but it's a really good thing.
BW,
I know what you mean about #4, and the woman on the bed looks like she's liking it.
Penny,
Too bad I can't give away one of the bedrooms. That would be fun!
I love #4. We're actually finishing up a re-do of my older daughter's bedroom and getting started on younger daughter's room. Older daughter loves muted tones while younger one goes for bright and fun :-)
Great post, Mary. I'm definitely a lily pad gal. I'd pick the last one. Although it would be nice to have two bedrooms, one for when I'm feeling cozy and one for when I want light.
Anonymous! Sorry I meant to address you by Anonymous!

Beth,
There is something about finishing remodeling a bedroom and then going in that very night and jumping into bed. It's a rare occurrence and one that is so enjoyable. Hope you're all having fun!
Joan,
Do it! Have two bedrooms. Then when you show people around your house, you can be trendy and pretend to be shocked when they are shocked by the fact that you have two bedrooms. Maybe that made sense. Maybe it didn't. Oh, well. Hope you have one that you love.
I wpu;d have to choose number 4 because I like small bedrooms. But then I would have to color it blue.
I think I'd have to go with #3 but I'd need a really good reading lamp.
My niece just moved into a new home and her eight year old son finally got his own bedroom ~ LIME GREEN on the walls ~ a lily pad for sure.
Linda,
Powder blue. Yeah, to maintain the feel. Of course, in dark blue it would make a nice den!
Kaelee,
Number three needs a couple nice goose neck lamps at the bedsides. That might have just made the decorator shiver and not know why.
Lime green. I love it! It's so nice to let a kid pick their own color of paint. I bet the little guy is so excited to have his own room--talk about incentive to move.
I'd pick number 4, it's light and airy and has a shelf that I would load with books :)
Hey, Snookie, that seems to be the most popular choice and it's a great one!
