SHOCKING CONFESSION OF A LUDDITE; My Dirty Little Secret

I figure the day after Christmas is a terrific time to reveal my dirty little secret.

After all, a large percentage of the population is at the mall for the after-Christmas sales. Others are scratching, swearing and swilling beer while they cheer on a favorite football team. And that’s the women -- I don’t know what men are doing today. I do know that virtually no one will be reading my blog. Mwua-ha-ha-ha-ha.

Back to my confession. I admit defeat. I give. I was wrong. You don’t know how long my ex-husband has waited to hear me say that. I digress again. Must be holiday-induced ADD.

Where were we? Confession? Here goes: I have an e-reader. And I like it.

I once swore I would never own an e-reader, much less enjoy it. E-readers were simply another example of technology warping our society. I preferred ink and paper, thank you very much. Until my boyfriend loaned me his Nook and…I was hooked. See why I don’t write poetry?! Anyway, the boyfriend is long gone, along with his Nook. But I’m a modern woman. I can buy my own damn e-reader.

Mine is a Kindle. And…it was love at first read. Instant gratification at its finest. There is no fear of withdrawal DT’s if my TBR pile gets low. I simply push a few buttons and a new read appears as if by magic. Of course, conversely, my bank account dwindles, but we won’t go there. Digital TBR piles aren’t flammable, don’t collect dust and don’t contain food stains (or worse) from previous readers.

When I discovered I could change the font size, I nearly cried with joy. My poor presbyopic eyes can decipher the words, with or without glasses. I actually look forward to spending time on my treadmill because I can entertain myself with a good book -- the e-reader fits perfectly on the treadmill shelf. Reading at night? The case I purchased contains a light. Not sure what type of book I’ll be in the mood for on my lunch break at work? No problem – I take ‘em all! As if that wasn’t enough, I was totally sold once I found out I could check out e-books through my local library at no charge, without ever leaving the comfort of my home.

And like many bibliophiles before me, I embraced the supplier of my reading habit.

So now you know my dirty little secret. I have an e-reader and I like it (humming along with Katie Perry).

I’m raffling the chance for a gift if you post a comment. The winner will have his/her choice of one autographed book from my backlist as posted on my web site http://www.carrieweaver.com/ or a ten dollar Amazon.com gift card. I’ll take comments until Thursday at midnight for the raffle. Since I’m on a budget, I can only ship to the U.S. or Canada. Photo credit: Ira Rosenson

Merry Christmas, Carrie. I swore too I would never get an e-reader. But, there are so many cheap or free ebooks these days, that I just got a Kindle for Christmas. How do you change the font to make it bigger??? And it is heavier than my paperback books, but I am going to give it a try.

Merry Christmas, Tammy! I bet you'll love your Kindle, too. It may be a bit heavier than a paperback, but probably no heavier than a hardback. And definitely less cumbersome than schlepping around several books.

I thought I changed font size from "settings" on the menu, but I'm not seeing font size as a selection.

Tech support was very responsive when I needed help downloading a library book. I'll let you know if I find the font selection in the meantime...

I am in the same boat as you. I always said I didn't want an e-reader but my son bought me one and I fell in love with it. I still read paper books but there is nothing like the e-reader. Love that you can increase the print. I haven't checked out the library thing yet but plan too.

Merry Christmas everyone! I got an e-reader this year too. KOBO original 6 inch black and white. I have to say I'm finding it tough to click the bottom button to change the pages. Maybe its just something to get use to. I'm thinking maybe in color and touch would work better for me! I will have to head to the book store and see what I can find out. Also I need to find cover for it! Hopefully there will be some good Boxing day sales. Carol

Mele Kalikimaka Carrie, long time no hear from you so glad to see you here! Never thought I would be, but I too am in love with my ereader. I still do like the feel of a real book in my hand, but I read a lot more on my ereader and am really enjoying it. I already have a huge digital tbr pile. There are so many ebook deals for free, for 99 cents for a 1.99 and lots from authors I know or have heard about, not just off the wall stuff. Instant gratification and no shipping costs that are more expensive than the book are great! Our local libraries loan ebooks out too! I've made the font bigger so that a normal page comes out on two or three pages on the ereader. It's big enough so I can read it without my glasses, but small enough that you get a good chunk to read on one page. Did I say I love it :)

Hi Carrie,
I do not yet own an ereader, but I own an ipod Touch with a kindle app and I read on it all the time. I have to turn pages quite frequently, but the beauty is that it's back lit, so I can read in the middle of the night easily. I'm hooked, too. I love having all of my books in one place and having them all open to the place I stopped reading. I still love print books and I'm reading my way through Harry Potter again, but it's so handy having digital books with me wherever I go.

Great post!

I can understand the benefits of owning/using an e-reader, but I still don't own one. I share my books with so many others (depending on the genre), and I think it might be difficult to share books on an e-reader without giving up said e-reader each time. It's not happenin'!

I keep telling myself that any reading is better than no reading at all. Speaking of which, I think I'll go read one of my Christmas present books! You can never have/read too many books.

Have a great holiday!

I have a secret too. With a couple gift cards I received for Christmas - I'm going to buy a Kindle. I too never thought I'd want one, but now I do and I can't wait to get it. BUT, it is the day after Christmas and I am not going anywhere near a store today. Maybe tomorrow...

Miss you on the Super thread on eHarl, but glad to see you here.

I bought my hubby a Kindle this Christmas. Of course, I had to test drive it with a new purchase--the new Nancy Warren mystery. Love it!

Happy New Year, Carrie!!! Your title made me laugh out loud!

Deb

Virginia, you have a terrific son! I wish I could remember how I increased the font size though. If yours is a Kindle, maybe you remember?

Carrie Weaver said...

Carol, I loved the touch screen with the Nook -- the buttons on the Kindle take slightly more effort. Color doesn't matter as much to me. But if you read magazines and illustrated books, color would be nice.

I don't have an eReader yet, and I do love the feel of a book in my hands, but I probably just plain love reading more than anything, so as long as there are words on a page, I'm sure I'll enjoy them no matter what format they come in.

Carrie Weaver said...

A belated Mele Kalikimaka to you, too, Snookie! I'm finding new authors to enjoy through my e-reader. I'm more likely to take a chance on an author I'm not familiar with if it only costs me a buck or two. And every once in a while there are freebies. My friend, Erin Quinn, had one I downloaded last week. She is multi-pubbed and trying her hand at something a bit different.

Carrie Weaver said...

Jeannie, I was afraid I'd get frustrated with the small page on the I-Pod -- good to know it's a handy alternative!

Carrie Weaver said...

Oh, Laney, I couldn't agree with you more! The important part is reading, not how the story is delivered. That's why I've come around after staunchly resisting digital. Choices are good! By the way, I think the Nook allows sharing with friends.:)

Carrie Weaver said...

Whew, Marcie, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this secret! It's good to see you, too. I miss you guys. But with a new full-time day job and trying to write, my time on the boards had to go.

Depending on where you live, you could order online and maybe receive it tomorrow or Wednesday?

I'd better make a disclaimer here. I'm not a paid spokesperson, just an enthusiastic convert, lol.

Carrie Weaver said...

Deb, what a wonderful gift for your hubby. And as a good wife, you'd definitely want to make sure the gift worked properly, lol. I'll have to download Nancy Warren's mystery -- I do love a good mystery. Right now I'm reading Kay Stockham's Christmas book, which is in digital format only. Kind of a departure for her. Excellent so far.

Hi Carrie! I can totally relate to resisting the e-reader revolution. But since we bought both a Kindle and a Nook in my house, we are both reading more than ever. And I love the ability to enlarge the text.

Happy New Year!

Carrie Weaver said...

I absolutely agree, Summer! More than anything, I've realized I love good storytelling, no matter the format. Thanks for stopping by to comment!

Carrie Weaver said...

Hi, Cathryn! Like you, I've found I'm reading more books now that I have the e-reader. And that's a very good thing. You're fortunate to have both of the major varieties in your household. I wish they would combine the best features of all e-readers into one device. I can always dream.

Carrie,

Santa brought me a Kindle Fire for Christmas (who knew he was actually listening to me) and I love it!

Being a former bookseller I swore I'd never own one, but...

I didn't know then what I know now :)

Hi Carrie! I too have crossed over to the dark side, lol! I said I didnt want an ereader either and then I found myself asking for one for christmas. And my wonderful hubby listened. He got me a Kindle Fire. I havent completly played with it yet, but I will in the next few days.

Have a wonderful day!

I haven't got an e-reader yet, but I really like the idea of being able to change the font size or use text-to-speech.

Carrie Weaver said...

Ro, you'll have to tell Santa he did a very good job! I can't wait to hear the features of the Kindle Fire once you've had a chance to play with it.

Carrie Weaver said...

Alina, amazing how quickly we change our tune! I like to think of it as being flexible, lol. Congratulations of having a hubby who listens. :)

Carrie Weaver said...

Chey, I haven't used the text-to-speech function yet. I'll have to explore that next. And, yes, changing the font size is one of my favorite things about an e-reader.

Ooh, hoo, hoo - I got me a Kindle Fire for Christmas and LURVE it!

I also bought my daddy a kindle (regular one cause I can't go too fast for him). Took him and my mom forever to get it registered, but finally they did. I don't know how he'll like it, but I gave him a $30.00 amazon gift card to go with it, so I'm thinking lots of free reads will warm him right up.

Nothing wrong with liking book and ereaders. It's kinda like enjoying both the microwave and the oven. Both cook the food, but in different ways.

Have fun reading this holiday!

Carrie Weaver said...

Amy, I bet your dad will love his Kindle once he gets the hang of it. I'm jealous about your Kindle Fire. And I agree, it's not an either/or situation. I enjoy both "regular" and digital books.

Kathy Altman said...

Hi there, Carrie! It's great to "see" you! Very best wishes with your full-time job! Darn that mortgage, anyway. :-) Congrats on your e-reader! I don't have one yet but my mom does--and she loves it! So I guess I'd better get busy. Right now I'm reading e-books on my laptop, which works well, but isn't quite as portable. Happy New Year!

Congrats on your E reader. Santa did not bring me a Kindle...sigh.
If I win the Amazon card, I'll use it for books.....love to read!!

I share your dirty little secret, Carrie. I've had a nook for going on 2 years now on Mother's Day, and I admit to loving it. I still love real, physical books, but my problem is that I can hardly ever bring myself to give a book away. So, my entire house is filled with physical books until my husband has decreed that we can never get another horizontal surface in our home because it would only be covered in books immediately.

I, too, love the ease of shopping (and hate the decline in my bank account). On the other hand, I love being able to change the font style and size and the background color (on my color nook -- yes, I have two), being able to borrow/lend certain books among friends, being able to get another book so easily without even getting dressed, and, perhaps best of all, being able to add to my collection without my dear hubby being any the wiser! Yes! Plus, I have less to carry around and still always have a new book to start if I happen to finish my current book.

It's official. I love my nook!

Carrie Weaver said...

Hi, Kathy! It's great to "see" you, too. I give you a lot of credit for reading digital books on your computer. I'm so tired of computers by the time I get home from work that I don't want to read on a PC screen per se. BTW, I'm trying to master dual screens at work -- twice the fun, lol.

Carrie Weaver said...

Jackie S., I hope Santa makes it up to you next year. I still love my paperbacks, too.

Carrie Weaver said...

JV, I'm obviously in good company with my dirty little secret. I do like the sharing feature on the Nook. I so wish they would combine the best features of the different brand e-readers into one unit.
