The game of rugby is an obsession in New Zealand, even more so this month as we host the Rugby World Cup and the hopes of our small nation rest on the sizeable shoulders of our mighty All Blacks.
I’ve managed to ignore our national sport most of my life but ladies, this week I’ve seen the light. And the light has a name. It’s Sonny Bill Williams.
But first some backstory. The All Blacks have a new skin-tight shirt which takes quite an effort to pull on. Halfway through a match with Tonga, All Black Sonny Bill Williams had a sleeve ripped off one tattooed arm.
He donned a replacement jersey with the assistance of the team’s doctor – a woman. Coincidence? Frankly, if I was Dr Deborah Robinson I would have left bodies in my wake to help Sonny Bill in his time of need.
Her professional demeanor while rolling a shirt over two hundred and thirty eight pounds of sweaty muscle simultaneously being cheered on by a 60,000 strong crowd is something to behold. Check out this video link.
So, here’s to you, Dr Robinson!
And to the opposition player who caused the wardrobe malfunction – Malo! (that’s thank you in Tongan).
So to continue the silliness, tell me the sportsman who makes you glad you’re a girl to go into the draw for any book from my backlist.

Wow nice body :) LOL, why in the world do they wear such tight clothing? Is it to keep the other team from grabbing it? If so, it obviously didn't work if his sleeve got torn off :)
I don't know any silly sports stories, but it would be nice to hear more silly sports stories right now... my nephew's classmate ended up in ICU after being sacked in football 3 weeks ago...he's ok now, he had a nasty concussion and was in the hospital for a week. He went back to school on Monday, but I believe he's out for the season.
Ugh, I prefer my male athletes to not have such a long list of criminal incidents, nor to cheat on his girlfriends – both things Sonny Bill Williams does. Australia was happy when he left the country.
I like Formula One drivers Mark Webber and Jaime Alguersuari – one of the few men in the world who actually does have jet black hair and gorgeous blue eyes, despite what romance books want us to think!
I’ve met David Beckham – so many people’s pick for some reason – and he’s such a metrosexual I don’t understand what women see in him!
Let me see, I am still distracted by your pictures to think straight for a moment.
I can't remember which college football game we were watching this weekend but there was a back up quarterback that made me sigh and say out loud how good looking he was, even with helmet hair! My husband ruined the moment by reminding me he was probably 22 years old at best.
I consider rodeo to be a sport so give me a cowboy any day of the week. Gotta admit the protective helmets they use now days kind of take away the allure.
And then there are the golfers. Lots of good looking ones there but then they go and wear pleated pants...
No, I am not picky. ;-)
Snookie, thinking good thoughts for that poor kid.
Peace, Julie
Snookie, I'm thinking the tight shirts are to avoid a grab. There was such a huge launch fuss made over the shirts, it is kinda funny one disintergrated on its first outing. I think football's like rugby...a lot of injuries. Glad your nephew's classmate's okay.
Kate...noooooo! I didn't know that about Sonny Bill. None of that's come up in the NZ media, as least that I've seen. I'm blocking my ears now. Beckham's an interesting phenomenon, his features are nothing special but the guy is a knockout in photos. Will check out Mark and Jaime.
Julie, aren't husbands killjoys? I haven't seen rodeo footage with cowboys in protective helmets. Is this a new thing? Do the Stetson's sit on top? Re Football, the show Friday Night Lights has been playing in NZ. It's provided quite an insight into the game which is quite alien to us.
I must admit that old Sonny Bill Williams is pretty much doing it for me this morning, even though, in general, I'm not big on tats. Yep, his most excellent physique has my brain short-circuited to the point that I'm having trouble thinking of any other male sports figures.
Too bad about the bad behavior. Unlike in fiction, in real life bad boys really do tend to be bad. That's why I'll go for the good guys every time. As long as I'm only looking, though, I'll just pretend I didn't read that.
Oh, yeah. Now that I've scrolled past the pictures, brain function is returning. Tom Brady of the New England Patriots fills out those tight American football pants pretty well. Whether you like guys with longer hair or closely shorn, you can find plenty of pictures of Tom in both modes through Google images.
Can we consider competitive dancing a sport? If so, then I'll nominate Gilles Marini, actor and competitor on Dancing with the Stars. He certainly gets my heart rate up! In case you don't know who he is, here's a link: http://truedat.typepad.com/.a/6a01156fa3024c970b0120a62083f1970b-pi
Karina! Thank you! Nice stuff. Tucked safely away in the middle of the USA, I don't know a thing about Sonny. While I don't have one athlete fav, I do like to watch the sport of fencing because at the smaller tournaments, you can get very close to the action.
Two words. Oh. Mama.
He does look good but I will have to say I don't watch any sports at all for the guys or the games. So I can't say I have any sports stories.
My husband doesn't know this, but I have a secret crush on relief pitcher Javier Lopez. He is a left handed specialist, doesn't get a lot of action, but he has the smoothest looking chin in all of baseball. He is the only one in the San Francisco Giants bullpen without a beard. Which is funny, since I really, really liked when my husband grew a "rally beard" last October.
Javier Lopez is soft-spoken, doesn't draw attention to himself and most of the time he is so effective that he only has to face one batter. So I don't get to see much of him. Sigh.
I used to watch a lot of triple A baseball live until we lost our team. I used to love how some of the batters would wiggle their butts when they were getting ready to bat. Needless to say they never focus on that point when they are broadcasting the games on TV.
This wardrobe change was a big deal as it made the daily photo spot on our Canadian news page on the internet.
Sonny Bill is my new favorite rugby player. I've seldom watched rugby before but he provides good incentive. I could do without the tats, though. Why mess with what looks pretty much like perfection?
I'm a sports junkie but can't come up with any current player I think is drool worthy. He's retired now but I used to love the Australian tennis player Patrick Rafter. Very handsome.
I NEED TO START WATCHING RUGBY.
I love athletes, two that come to mind right now are Indycar driver Oriol Servia, and hockey player Drew Doughty. Not the most well known guys around the world, but both very nice to look at.
JV, I was thinking that about real life bad boys too. Redemption seems a little trickier. I don't know about Sonny Bill but some of these young talented sportsmen get their heads turned - wealth, fame, adulation - it can be a dangerous combination when you're immature.
But on a positive note...the Gilles link. Thanks!
Mary, you're welcome. I doubt Sonny Bill is known outside the Antipodes or rugby circles. I've never been to a fencing match. Not entirely sure I'd want to be as close as you do to the action.
Helen finds the right words. She must be a Rita award winner.
Virginia, you're a sports-free zone, that's quite an achievement. I got hooked into watching soccer while living in England. Other than that, all my sports-watching has been through social necessity. It's how I currently quality time with my currently taciturn teenage son.
Kristina, secret crushes. I love those. And over a smooth chin in a bearded world. For the life of me I can't get Popeye out of my mind now. And your Javier's soft-spoken AND competant. No wonder you're smitten. I suspect your husband knows though. Mine always does.
Kaelee, so the post made Canada? Interesting. Did you know your guys won their first round against Tonga? They're doing really well.
So in terms of baseball, lives games are best for vicarious thrills. I've made a note.
Darlene, if you want a rugby player who embodies all the virtues, including hotness, may I suggest Richie McCaw, the captain of the All Blacks. This guy ticks all the boxes including being exemplary in his private life.
Pat Rafter was a cutie.
Vicki, lets not be too hasty. Start with the highlights (which I'll be going baack to, once the world cup is over.
Summer, and they have such great names. Oriol Servia and Drew Doughty. Why can't I think up names like that for fictional heroes. Have you heard of Will Power, the formula one driver. Now that makes me smile.
Oh, wow, this post today is just...wow!
That's some nice eye candy right there. I'm not sure I can think of an athlete who could top that puppy.
This reminds me....Last night the hubs and I caught a piece on Hershell Walker on ESPN. I believe Hershell is 49 or 50 rs old now, but my goodness, that man looks amazing! He said he does 1500 pushups a day, close to 2000 sit ups, and 500 dips (upside down against the wall pushups) and still runs a 4.7 in the 40. That's, like, amazing. And you should SEE him. I love when an older guy looks amazing - and he fits the bill. (Oh, and since some might not be American football fans - Hershell is a Heisman award winner and spent 15 yrs in the NFL)
Thanks, Katrina, for the very yummy post!
I love Derek Jeter. He's a great athlete and a classy guy.
Grrrrrrrrrr. Now they need to make those shorts smaller and tighter....
My favorite male athlete is Patrick Rafter, the Australian tennis player.
Oh my, that was a nice blog to open. Not crazy about the tats either, but I hardly noticed.
My husband loves football and one Sunday they were interviewing Tom Brady of the New England Patriots. Now there's a hunk. I even watched football for a while.
Thanks for the fun post.

1500 push-ups, 2000 sit-ups. You know what I love about this stuff. It makes me think, oh well, no point trying to match that. Now where's that cookie jar. But yes, older people looking amazing, now that deserves some respect because you know how hard it is to get there.
Jane, just googled Derek Jeter and second your choice.
Sarah, there is such a thing as shorts that are too tight, sweetie.
Tammy gives another vote to Patrick Rafter. That's three.
Linda, there was a great tv ad here. A beautifully dressed 76year old woman, in a sleek black dress and pearls with a barbed wire tatt on her arm, cooking a family roast. Some reference to some mistakes being impossible to reverse. Very funny. Have no idea what they were advertising. Will now go look at Tom Brady
Thanks, Karina. Nice start to the morning :) I don't usually like tats but on Sonny they look pretty good.
The only sport I watch is tennis so I've always got my eyes peeled for when those guys change shirts between sets.Rafael Nadal is my fave but Andy Roddick looks pretty good, too.
Darlene, Pat Rafter is still playing tennis. He plays in Masters tournaments and he's playing in the Davis Cup in Sydney as I write. He is a hottie, I'll agree.
Correction. Pat Rafter is the Aussie Davis Cup captain but he's not playing in the tournament. However he does still play in the masters tournaments.
Hot pics! Time to find the sports channel.
Joan, good to hear Pat Rafter's still going strong. I've fallen away from watching tennis lately though I see Rafael met his match in the US Open this week.
Linda s, happy channel surfing.
I'll take an All Black or a Wallaby with my coffee thank you!! Maybe even a Bronco or Cowboy - or two.
Hi Karina
Fancy finding Sonny here! The Herald managed to keep him on the home page of their website for four days as well....
I still think (showing my age) that John Kirwin is my favorite and has been for years. It's great to see him back here coaching the Japanese.
Marybelle, lets hope there's an Aussie/All Black final.
Toni, John Kirwin is a class act isn't he? There was news footage of him talking fluent Japanese in a Japanese tv interview.
Ahhhh, man, I'm feeling old today.
I don't watch much sports these days. "Back in the day", though, I was a huge Bobby Orr fan (Boston Bruins in the 70s). Now he is around 60 years of age, and I think he gets better looking every year. Hubba hubba. (Reminds me of Mark Harmon - oh! - Mark Harmon used to play football! Does that count? I can never have too much of Mark. "Mark" my words.)
I'm not really into sports and don't know any cute athletes. But I might wanna check out those rugby guys...
My choice is Phillip Rivers..the cutie quarterback of the San Diego Chargers football team...Of course I'm partial since I live only about 10 minutes from the San Diego stadium and have been a fan of theirs for years.
JFWisherd(at)aol(dot)com
My favorite is my grandson Connor who is playing this year on the basketball team at his college in California. Not only is he a cute boy he is a very good player. He will always be my favorite athlete.
I don't often watch sports.
Laney4, any sportsman who still looks hot at 60 is more impressive than a sportsman with youth on his side. Did Mark Harmon go into acting? I'm sure I know that name.
Jo's Daughter and Chey, as I've just realized you don't have to follow a sport to appreciate its beneficial impact on the male physique.
JackieW, speaking of Phillip have you read Susan Elizabeth Phillips Chicago Stars series? They're some of my favourite books.
Joy, isn't it great to lay claim to these wonderful tall young men whose diapers you once changed. Best of all you get to claim some credit for their athletic ability.
Karina, Mark Harmon was, I believe, on the show "ER" a number of years ago (though I didn't watch it) and has been leading the investigative team on "NCIS" now for a number of years.
Hey again. Mark Harmon was on St. Elsewhere (not ER; sorry, JV), but most people know him from NCIS, like JV said. I just checked his bio. He turned 60 on Sept 2/11. Wow....
Thanks JV and Laney...I knew I knew that name.
Still looks good at 60, now that's a goal (I'm mixing metaphors, in rugby it's a try as my 17 year old patiently reminds me)
Nice Eye Candy! TY TY !!
