I'll warn you now--I'm going to get a wee bit sappy today. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm going to get a lot sappy because today is SUCH a special day to me. You see, today is my 20th wedding anniversary. Not only that, it's also my son's 16th birthday (and no, I hadn't planned to spend my 4th anniversary in L&D. That was a total surprise!).So what have I been doing these last few days? Thinking, remembering, and, to be honest, being a little sad that time has passed so quickly. Has it really been 20 years? (And am I ready to put my child behind the wheel alone? Ack! LOL)
I remember when I stepped outside of the house (we had an outdoor wedding) to make the walk down the aisle to the lake where we said our vows. I remember the gorgeous day. We all know September weather can be iffy but after non-stop days of 90 degree weather, high humidity--and rain--the Saturday of our wedding dawned bright and sunny, breezy, with temps in the low 70s. Everything was so fresh and green and vivid. I remember when I said my vows, when my nephew squealed into the driveway (late as always), and my shock when, instead of the photographer we had talked to, another roared in on a Harley. Apparently he wanted to combine business with pleasure and take a ride. LOL

Four years later, I remember going to the midwife the day before my anniversary for a checkup. She said something along the lines of 'not long now' but since I was still over three weeks away from my due date I left thinking I would spend more hot, hot days packing around a baby who thought my insides were his personal gymboree.
You see where I'm going with this, right? LOL Yeah, it was the calm before the storm. After 2 pregnancies I've been told I have quick babies--and if I learned nothing with my son's birth, it was that he once he makes his mind up, there's no stopping him. Long story short, our son was born just before midnight the night of our fourth wedding anniversary. He made for a pretty special present, no?
I can't believe 16 years have passed. I can't believe 20 years have passed! Where did it go? I remember when I prayed for my son to sleep through the night. I remember when we brought our daughter home from the hospital 2 years later and SHE slept through the night before my son. I remember his first steps. His first day of school. Oh, that nearly broke my heart. I'd never seen my husband cry but when we put our son on the school bus looking so terrified and pale and little, our brave smiles faded the moment the bus pulled away and we leaned on each other and cried the entire walk back to the house. Then, I remember how we jumped in the car and raced to the school to watch him get off the bus anyway (because the teacher had told us she'd prefer parents not come into the classroom because it made first days all that much harder.) My husband snuck into the school and when he came back, his eyes still blood-shot, he reported that we were the only ones crying, not our brave little boy.
In the last 20 years my husband and I have had our share of ups and downs. We've cared for sick parents, buried loved ones, made new friends and slowly drifted apart from old ones. We've faced financial issues and stacks of bills, and had fights that seemed to come out of nowhere. But through it all the one thing that has remained constant is the fact that when times get tough we know, without a doubt, we can depend on each other. In twenty years, that hasn't faltered and I pray to God it never does. That's the key, isn't it? That trust? I believe it is. And it's a big part of why I write romance, because I believe in the power of love and trust and the bond that forms when two people share the same goal of making a sometimes rocky relationship work.
Well, if the above wasn't enough today is special for another reason. After an 18 month span between books, I'm celebrating the release of THE SHERIFF'S DAUGHTER, the first in a four book series that will be on shelves September, October, November (2011) and January, 2012. Yeah, I'm a little bit excited, and I hope you'll help me celebrate as well by spreading the news.
I'll pick a name from those who post a comment below. The winner will receive an autographed copy of THE SHERIFF'S DAUGHTER, and a copy of MONTANA SKIES (the book in which my heroine, Carly Taggert, first appeared). What do you have to do?
Too often we focus on all the bad stuff going on. All you have to do is tell me something you have to celebrate and be thankful for this week. Me? I'm thankful for 20 years, a loving husband and two teenagers who are slowly making me gray. ;) Here's to a lot more years--and gray hairs--to come. *cheers* (I promised cyber-cake to a few friends so help yourself! It's a delicious Coldstone Creamery Reese Cup Cake. YUM! Eat all you want. It's calorie-free today!) What are we celebrating with you???

Kay, I am thankful for a lot of things this week. We are in the "short rows" of getting our house back together after a burst pipe in the attic over a month ago. Our daughter is getting married in five weeks so you can imagine the timing was not great.
I am thankful I came home just as the pipes burst and we were able to save our newly remodeled wood floors. We both could have been away on business.
I am thankful the tarp we had on the back of the house held during Irene.
I am thankful we have the financial stability to get the repairs done and pay deposits since the insurance check was delayed in coming.
I am thankful, most of all, that we have a house standing unlike my friend in the storm center on North Carolina's coast or those in Texas who have watched their homes burn.
Thanks for the gratitude reminder. It is a great way to start the day.
Can't wait for your series...whoohoo!
Oh, and this tidbit: I had my baby shower three weeks before my due date, had set aside things to do because I knew I was going to be late, and oops, my son arrived quickly the next day!
Peace, Julie
What beautiful memories you have, Kay. I loved reliving those moments with you.
Thankful? I'm thankful for so much in my life. The good Lord blessed me with a wonderful husband, two healthy and sometimes pain in the butt children, and a job I love. I'm very thankful to my husband who gets up every morning to work for our family, giving me the opportunity to stay home and write. That's a true blessing.
And I agree with Julie. I'm very thankful to be safe from harm when so many in this world aren't.
Congrats on the books! I'm happy to be sharing October with you :)
Julie, I love your gratitude list! Thanks for posting it.
Liz, October is a great month ;) Congrats on your upcoming release!
Kay
Happy anniversary, Kay. What a beautiful real-life love story. No wonder you became a romance writer.
When each of her three daughters got married, my mother requested the song Sunrise, Sunset play in church before the wedding ceremony. I didn't understand at the time. But, boy, I do now. Here are some of the beautiful lyrics:
Is this the little girl I carried? Is this the little boy at play? I don't remember growing older. When did they?
When did she get to be a beauty? When did he grow to be so tall? Wasn't it yesterday
When they were small?
Sunrise, sunset. Sunrise, sunset. Swiftly fly the years. One season following another. Laden with happiness and tears
Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday to your son. I am thankful that my husband and I both have jobs and can pay our bills. I am thankful that we are healthy.I am thankful for my family.
Congrats on both of your celebrations today!!! Thanks for the reminder--looking back is a good thing. Makes us appreciate the now all the more.
Darlene, I love that song. It really says it all, doesn't it?
Happy day, eveyone!
Deb
Darlene, I have to go find that song. It sounds beautiful!
Crystal, to be healthy is truly a gift, isn't it?
Deb, ((hugs)) to you on all you've been through of late.
Kay
Congrats, Kay! I am thankful for good health for me and my loved ones! Would love to read your books.
Congratulations, Kay! On the anniversary, your son's bday, the new book series. All of it is fabulous!
I happy for the bright, sunny, absolutely gorgeous late summer day we're having in MN today!
Kay, I'm definitely in on the celebration as we celebrated our 20th anniversary just last week (and our oldest son also turned 16 this year). Today I celebrate not giving up. Struggling with the thing that always seems to get the best of me--losing weight--but I won't give up. Not now, not ever.
Happy Anniversary to you and your husband, and happy birthday to your son! I'm thankful for my healthy family, my dog, and the daily pleasure of books.
Happy Anniversary Kay. What a beautiful wedding photo.
Right now I am very thankful for half decent weather this summer and hopefully for a few more weeks. I'm thankful for my wonderful husband ~ we celebrated our 43rd anniversary in August.
I'm happy that my older sister phoned and was so pumped about a glider ride she took on the weekend. She had a flooded basement this year and mold has set in and her and her husband were so depressed. Her kids bought her a flight in a glider and she soared like a eagle. She said it was AWESOME. We could hear her happiness though the phone. This makes me so happy as well as I was so worried about her.
It is happy times all around for you today Kay. I wish you all good things to come in the years to come. Last year around this time, the 13th of Septmeber, my cousin should have been celebrating her 35th wedding anniversary, but her husband passed away in August of that same year. But today is also would have been my grandparents anniversary and they were together nearly 50 yrs.. I also have another cousin who married in September on the 15th and they are married 21 yrs this year. I think September is a good month for marriages.. Long and Loving I wouls say..
All of these people, well the ones still with me, helped me to get through my own loss this year, when my mother died. I and I am so grateful for them all..
Have a wonderful day and continue to love and honour one another, and celebrate the blessing of your son...
Kay, a whole bunch of congrats! Hope you have a glorious day and many more anniversaries to come. I am grateful for a thirty+ year marriage and a twenty year old son who does his school stuff on his own.
Kay, the song Sunrise, Sunset is from the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Since the play (and movie) is about the Jewish father of five daughters, kind of funny that my Catholic mother requested the song to be played before our weddings.
Congratulations Kay on your anniversary. My husband and I also celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary this year. On our honeymoon, we met a couple who'd been married 10 years, and I remember thinking they were so old. Yikes!
And thanks Darlene for getting all the songs from Fiddler stuck in my head today. I love that movie and the soundtrack. :) Nothing like a movie that makes you feeling like dancing and singing.
Hau'oli ho'omaika'i e Kay a me husband! Hau'oli la hanau e keiki kane. LOL I bet you got two words out of that! Happy Anniversary Kay and Husband, happy birthday son!
My husband and I are headed for our 25th anniversary on October 4th. I am so greatful for having him by my side all these years and looking forward to many more to come. There's been lots of ups and downs but through it all is the love and trust that is there. My son will be turning 17 in a couple of weeks. It's been a long road getting him through school. He's a senior and looks like he's going to make it. He's doing projects and directed studies classes instead of having to sit in a classroom which has been a big positive step for him. So I am greatful for a lot of things, but mostly I am greatful for my family.
BTW, love your pictures :)
keiki kane, maybe I should have said boy child (as that is the literal translation:), though it means son in this instance).
I forgot to mention we did get married in a church, but our reception was at the beach in beautiful sunny weather ;)
Happy Anniversary to you and your husband and Happy Birthday to your son. I could go for a Coldstone Creamery cake right now.
Cogratulations on your anniversary. And happy birthday to your son.
Celebrations - Next week we celebrate our 40th anniversary. And our daughter celebrates her 10th one. And a few weeks later grandbaby turns two. Lots of reasons to be happy.
I'm just about 3/4 of the way through the Sheriff's Daughter and loving it. Happy it's a series!
Kay,
Happy Anniversary! Happy Birthday to your son! And congratu8lations on the new series. I share Oct with you too. Yay!!
I'm thankfully we have been spared from the Texas wildfires. Fires are burning in every county around us. It's heartbreaking to see all the destuction and broken lives. But we finally have cooler temps and hopefully rain will follow. Quickly is eveyone's prayer.
Hi Kay
Congratulations on your anniversary and on the new series. I'm grateful for my gorgeous man and my two sons. The three of them make me smile on a daily basis. That's always a wonderful thing.
Congrats on your anniversary! This is really bad but you just reminded me that my anniversary is tomorrow my 27th. I didn't even realise that tomorrow is Sept. 8th and I had totally forgotten about our anniversary. I guess I will have to cook hubby something special, he will have to work tomorrow for sure. I am sure he has forgotten too. That's what happens in this busy world of ours. My son just turned 22 in Augest and he got to move back to the college dorm for his birthday. Of course we had his cake and things before his bday.
Hi Kay,
Happy anniversary and wishing your new series all the very best.
I am grateful for the wonderful family and friends that i have. They're the best. Also today is my brothers 18th birthday. We are planning a surprise for him in the evening. I am 4 years older and we have had our fair share of fights while growing up but i'm so happy to have him in my life because in my eyes his the best brother ever.
Just wanted to wish you and you husband a VERY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. May you have many, many, more.
And don't enter me in the contest as I already have and have read all your books.
Trying this one more time.
Oh Kay you had me crying. Happy anniversary. You both look like teens.
I am grateful for my mom to still be with us. After losing dad last year its special to still talk to her daily.
Also I am grateful for my great niece Amya. She is 4 and a joy.
Hugs Judy f
Kay, Happy Anniversary and congratulations. Congrats, too, on the series. After doing a trilogy I know how hard it is to get all those books written before a single one comes out.
I'll be celebrating my 27th wedding anniversary this year. I'm grateful for my husband and for my children. The years fly way too fast. On the positive side, I'm grateful to know the kids as young adults (they're 24, 21 and 19) and see the wonderful people they've become.
Beautiful pics! Congrats on the 20 and here's to 20 more!! Happy b-day to your son. Oh and to Release Day!!
Like Ellen Too - I have the complete Kay Stockham library no need to put my name in the draw.
What am I thankful for? SuperRomance authors of course!!
Happy Anniversary Kay! And Happy Birthday to your son! Oh and Congrats on the new series!
I am thankful for so much in my life. I have a wonderful husband how is my rock. He's my best friend too. We will celebrate our 12th anniversary next month. Yes we have had our ups and downs, but they have just made us that much stronger. I am also blessed to have three great kids who may drive me crazy, but never cease to amaze me. I also have a wonderful family who are there for me even 2000 miles away. I am also lucky enough to be able to stay home and pursue my love of writing and cake decorating.
Here's to many more happy years!
Alina
A great day for you, Kay, personally and professionally. As someone who didn't meet the right guy until she was 29, I have to say you two look like children on your wedding day! Wise beyond your years obviously for picking the perfect partner so young.
Looking forward to your series.
Karina
Hi, all!
Sorry I disappeared for a bit. LOL I'm sure you understand why. After school we had driver's ed, the dh and I had dinner, and then we had the real Coldstone Creamery Reese Cup cake for ds's birthday. YUMMY! I highly recommend it. Toss in caramel, chocolate chips and chocolate shavings and you have a chocolate/sugar coma. LOL
I LOVED reading all the gratitude posts. I'll be the first to admit I focus too much on the negative, so reading the thankful posts about family, spouses, and those still with us made me smile. You guys rock. And thanks for the congrats on 20 years. It hasn't been easy, but it has been fun. :)
I'm going to leave this up for now and allow entries until midnight before I choose a winner. Keep those posts coming!
Best,
Kay
Hay Kay--Congratulations on the anniversary, the birthday and the new book. Love the photos and your post made me cry.
I'm grateful for my (now grown) kids and spending Labor Day weekend as a family. It was wonderful.
Congratulations, Kay! I hope you're out celebrating your special day. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I'm thankful that Spring is here at last. My family are all well & life is rather good.
And the winner is--PATRICIAW! Patricia, please contact me through my website with your shipping info. Congrats! And good luck with the weight loss. I think that's something we can all identify with.
Thanks, everyone, for posting!
Kay
Kay, first Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday to your first-born! Wow! What a great wedding photo, by the way. The baby photo is sweet, too. Enjoy the time because it just keeps going by faster and faster. It seems like only yesterday I was sending my daughter to kindergarten, and now she's 21 and in her last year of college. Where does the time go?
I'm celebrating that my mother is home from the hospital and feeling a bit better. I was really worried that I was going to lose her when she went in, so having her back home and feeling better means so much to me.
And congratulations on your new books series!
Kay, what a wonderful story! I hope you all had a fabulous day.
I haven't had time to get to this blog for a while and it was a lovely first post to read!
