Refresh or Recycle?

by Emmie Dark

Hello everyone, it’s an absolute honor to join you on the SuperRomance author’s blog. My first SuperRomance, “Cassie’s Grand Plan”, is due out in March next year and there’ll be another book to follow shortly after (title still TBA!). I’ve been thinking for a while about what to write for my inaugural post on the blog and it wasn’t until last night that I pinned it down.

It’s the early days of Spring in the southern hemisphere (not that you can really tell from Melbourne’s chilly weather this week) and I’ve got a little Spring itch to redecorate. Nothing too dramatic, although a bathroom renovation is on the cards, but I’m more interested in sprucing up my living room.

Like many people, I’ve got a hotch-potch collection of furniture. Some pieces I’ve bought myself, some pieces I’ve inherited. However it seems to me that the fashion in interior design these days is very sleek - very coordinated and polished. I browse through furniture stores and design catalogues and think how wonderful it would be to just start fresh, throw everything out and bring in a totally matching new look.

But apart from the expense, I don’t want to throw everything out! I love my couches, even though they’re getting a little worn, and I love the huge dresser that my mum helped me pick out many years ago. My Victorian table with its mis-matched Edwardian barley-twist chairs is incredibly impractical (it seats six, at the absolute most, and the two people on the end have to watch their knees – the carved underside can bite). But it belonged to my grandmother – and she inherited it from her mother. My dad still remembers sitting at that table for Sunday roasts. I don’t want to give that up for something more glossy and streamlined.

So how do I bring a fresh new look into the room when I’m not willing to part with anything that’s in there?

It’s about now that I wish I possessed the interior decorating flair that I bestowed on Cassie, my heroine in Cassie’s Grand Plan. I need that artful touch that some people have – of knowing just how to group a collection of items on a shelf to make them look interesting, and how to arrange a throw and some cushions to brighten up a room.

For now, I’m going to let the whole idea sit in the back of my head for a while and see what I come up with when the sun starts to shine. Perhaps that will bring some inspiration. Or perhaps it will just help make the old stuff look a little new again!

What’s your favorite piece of furniture, and why? Don't forget, everyone who comments goes in the running to win a Kindle.

Hi Emmie,
Congratulations on your debut novel for Super Romance and your first blog! I'm on the same wavelength at the moment - looking around my home that has been shut up for the winter and wanting to throw open doors and windows and perk up the decor with some new pieces.
My favourite piece of furniture is a pair of 1910 french bedside tables. I bought them with my "baby money" - money my grandfather gave each of his grandchildren on the birth of their first child. But as it turned out, I never had a child. The sensible thing would have been to put that little nest egg away and save it. Instead I went out and bought these gorgeous tables that I'd been lusting after for weeks. It's a long time ago now but they still give me as much pleasure today as they did the day I walked out of the antique store with them.

Oh, who cares for sensible when you can buy gorgeous furniture instead! And it's lovely that you have a story to go with them too -- that makes it all the more special!

My favorite piece of furniture is a "pie safe" that my husband and his father built from a pattern in Popular Mechanics since we couldn't afford an antique piece. It has hand punched copper panels. What a future heirloom!

We just have recovered from a burst pipe in the house which required a lot of repairs including new carpet. I have been putting things back together and using it as an opportunity to move items from one room to another, get things out of closets and display them, and just enjoy the process.

Congrats and looking forward to reading your books!

Hi Emmie! I'm still in the process of decorating my house the first-time around! Curtains are the bane of my existence right now!

My favorite old piece of furniture is a clock that my grandparents gave me.It isn't anything special but it reminds of spending time in their house and seeing it on the wall. My favorite new piece of furniture is a red buffet table that my hubby bought. Red is my favorite color and it looks so awesome in my kitchen!

Congrats on your first book!

Yay Emmie, it's so cool to see you here.

Congrats on your debut. Wheeee, can't wait to read it.

My office is where I'd love to make some changes. I need more bookshelves and a stationery cupboard for starters. I don't need a new desk (you can barely see the one I've got anyway, it's always covered in papers and toys and . . . stuff!)

Whatever you do, don't watch those 'home decorating' shows. Whenever I tune in, they're making the weirdest things!

It's hard to decide which piece of furniture is my favorite. It's a toss up between two small tables with marble tops that were my mother's ~ she got them just after she and my dad married in 1939 or the dining room table from the same time.

Hi Julie -- I love the idea of making your own heirlooms! What a really special piece of furniture you have there.

Good luck with the clean up after the pipes. I had some flooding earlier this year, and the clean up was awful. I feel your pain!

Emmie said...

Hi Robin -- a red buffet table? I love the sound of that! I have a red wall in my living room and (like everything else) it's not going anywhere any time soon. I love red, but I'm not sure I could have red furniture against my red wall. But then who knows??

Emmie said...

Hi Ebony -- I agree, those home decorating shows seem to be all about making weird stuff like incredibly ugly lamp shades from rolled up newspaper. I think I want to go slightly more stylish than that!

Emmie said...

Hi Ellen -- I love that look of antique timber and marble. It's so classy and elegant. And, like me, you have history and memories that go with your favourite pieces. I think that's so important.

Congratulations, Emmie!! I don't have a favourite piece of furniture...yet. When I move into a new place I am planning on making the house match, that way in 10 years when I'm still loving the furniture I've bought, I won't need to choose between sentimental value and matching...there is absolutely no way that this plan can fail :P

Congratulations!! You must be so proud.

I don't have a favorite piece of furniture. I have my eye on my Mother's side-board cupboard. Does that count??

Congratulations on getting your book published Emmie :)

I dont really have a favorite piece of furniture. My husband just built a punee that is pretty cool. We can store all our extra blankets and sleeping bags in it. It was going to be the spare room bed, but my son has decided he likes it better than his bed, so has been sleeping on it.

Emmie said...

Hi Hayley -- I love the idea of collecting new furniture AND making new memories at the same time! Agree, it's an infallible plan!

Emmie said...

Hi Marybelle -- thank you! I'm really excited about the new release -- despite all the work that's gone into revisions and editing and the like, I don't think it will feel 'real' until I hold that book in my hand next year! Good luck with getting hold of that sideboard! ;)

Emmie said...

Hi Snookie -- I had to look up 'punee' -- I've learned something today! Again, I think it's fantastic to have furniture that was handmade by family members -- what away to create heirlooms. Thanks for the congratulations -- I'm still very excited by the news.

Hi Emmie

Congratulations on your first book and your first blog post. It's great to know that you're just across 'the ditch' as well ;-) Melbourne is a beautiful city and I always enjoy visiting.

I tend to be more attached to plants than furniture. I have a beautiful (huge) ficus that I inherited and have patiently nursed back to health.

Hi Emmie,
congratulations on your first book, I can't wait till it comes out.
I love all things to do with houses, except the cleaning, and I've got a nice collection of old/retro mirrors started up. I have an eclectic taste in furnishings, and I find lamps, mirrors and wall colour can 'bring together' all the elements of a room.

Hi Emmie, congratulations on your upcoming debut!!

We might be having to move interstate so I am trying to look at it as the ultimate makover opportunity.

I did try and post but I think the cybergods ate it - so apologies if you end up with 2 from me.

Congratulations, Emmie, on your first book. How very exciting.
I have a glass fronted bookcase from the turn of the last century that was my grandmother's. In it are two books from mid 1800's that belonged to my great-great grandfather.

Emmie said...

Hi Toni -- thanks for the congratulations! I think plants can hold a special place, especially ones you've nursed back to health! For me, any plant that manages to stay green for more than a couple of weeks under my care deserves a medal!

Emmie said...

Hi Lia -- I like the idea of a mirror collection! I'm actually thinking a mirror might be an important part of my living room makeover -- a great way to bring in some more light. I like those engraved ones, which just happen to be very expensive (of course)!

Emmie said...

Hi Anita -- good luck with the move. Moving is always a great opportunity start with a clean slate. Hope it works for you!

Emmie said...

Hi Linda -- great story about your bookcase and its books! What a wonderful treasure.

Hi, Emmie. It's fun to get to know you a little before your first Super comes out. Congrats in advance!

My favorite piece of furniture is a delicate cherry table in the foyer. When my husband and I were newly married, we decided we'd buy furniture for our anniversaries instead of getting each other individual presents. Over the next ten years, we amassed some very nice pieces. We still occasionally do the anniversary furniture.

Hi Emmie! Congrats on selling to Super. Bet you can't wait to see your first cover!!! lol

I have a red couch that I adore. It's in our 4 season porch with knotty pine walls. Brightens and warms the room at the same time.

Congratulations on your future Supers.
I don't have a favorite piece of furniture. I do however have some modern art done by brother that I couldn't part with.

Congrats on your debut, Emmie.

Growing up, my favorite piece of furniture was my mother's piano. I loved the glossy bordeaux coloring. I loved tinkering on the keys. It was special and we knew to treat it as such, but Mom never stopped us from touching it, even when we pretty much killed the accompanying bench.

Now, I don't so much have a favorite piece of furniture.

Mary Brady said...

Hi Emmie, congrats on becoming a Super author!

I guess my favorite piece of furniture is my couch--corny warning--because my husband and I sit there and share our day's news.

I have a small drop leaf table that belonged to my grandmother. I remember it sitting near her living room window with African violets blooming on it. It now sits in my living room (no African violets)-just great memories!!

I guess my favorite piece of furniture would be my kitchen table. My dad gave it to me and it has the claw feet on it. I did refinish it when I first got it and it needs it again. I only have four chairs to it and I need to get more.

Interesting question. Hmmmm. It's hard to decide. I could choose our water bed because it's so very comfy, or I could choose the bookcase that my late father made. For beauty it may be the secretary that's currently in storage but that my father and his mother had before me. It's a graceful piece.

Hi, Emmie, and welcome :)

First, I'll suggest using fabrics to update your look. New curtains, toss pillows and a rug does wonders for reviving a room. I can hear how much you like many of your pieces, so I vote you hold on to some of them.

I have a few pieces of furniture I've inherited from my grandmother. My favorite is probably my drop-leafed table in the foyer. I also have an old rocker from my greatgrandmother that I like. Needs re-springing and some new fabic, but I like knowing it was hers.

Congrats on your books!

My favourite piece of furniture is an old desk that has lots of places to put things, then when you close the desk it's a table.

Congrats on your upcoming SuperRomance debut, Emmie. I love the couch. I veg out there and watch TV or lie down with a good book.

Hi Emmie, congrats again on your sale and welcome to the Super blog! My favorite piece of furniture is a couch with rolled arms and scalloped back that was an heirloom in my husband's family. It's massive - a six foot two man can easily stretch out without touching the sides - and weighs a ton. We've had it recovered twice now. One time we had to take out the living room picture window to get it out of the house. Picture me propping up the huge pane of glass while eight months pregnant.

As for redecorating - I agree with Liz. A unifying accent of color in soft furnishings - something modern and contemporary - will freshen up the room.

Emmie said...

Thanks everyone for your kind wishes and congratulations -- and for the decorating advice! It's lovely to hear the stories about your favourite furniture pieces and I'm definitely going to look into some new cushions and a rug to give my room a facelift!

Hi Emmie. Late to the party, sorry. Huge congrats on your first book. Such an exciting time. And you already got the scary bit out of the way and sold the second one! Yay!

My favourite piece of furniture is a bit of a folly. It's a 1970's chinoiserie chaise lounge, and it's nearly 4 metres long ( I think they made it at the same place they made Joan's monster couch!!). I bought it when we were living in NZ and nearly killed myself helping the man I hired to pick it up get it into the back of his van. The back rest is all fretwork, in a square, maze sort of Asian style, and the top of the back rest is actually a wide shelf that you can rest a plate or cup of coffee on. The seat part is about three metres, then there's a built in table with a mother of pearl decorative inlay, which is protected by a sheet of glass. Originally it was upholstered with a single long pad in yellow Asian brocade, but I had it redone with 3 separate cushions, which have been upholstered in a custom fabric made by my SIL, made up of half a dozen scanned images of vintage Chinese advertising posters. I'm sure some people hate it on sight, but I ADORE it and I cannot wait to have our renovation done next year when it will take pride of place in my writing room. I plan to loll on it while doing line edits and AA's and plotting new stories...

Sarah Mayberry said...

PS. Emmie, I love interiors with a mix of old and new. We have very traditional club sort of couches with an industrial coffee table. And I am currently convincing my brother to pair modern dining chairs with his rustic kitchen table. I have a ton of decorating mags you can have if you like! I have way too many - my way of staving off the urge to get the renovation underway RIGHT NOW when I know we have to wait until next year.

Congratulations on your sale and welcome to Supers.

I have a dining room set that belonged to my grandmother. I've often wanted to buy new dining room furniture, but I can't bear to part with it.

Hi Emmie

Congratulations on your first official Superromance post - not to mention your two wonderful books. Can't wait till they come out!

I love the idea of redecorating and refurnishing - but anything I buy these days has to be boy-proof - with 3 young ones, nothing much survives for long!

I must admit, my pride and joy are the four metallic-red retro bar stools I managed to purchase not so long ago on a well-known auction site. Not only are they hardy, but they look great and brighten up the kithen area with a splash of colour.

Good luck on your redecorating, and even more on your writing!

Sarah, Linda and Michelle -- thanks so much for your congrats and for the lovely stories about your furniture! I must say this post has been very inspiring -- I think my weekend is going to be spent checking out furniture and decorator stores and perhaps even buying a couple of magazines for further inspiration!

We have an antique upright piano we bought when we were young, both had jobs, no kids, and were renting. It's both a musical instrument and a gorgeous piece of furniture with real ebony and ivory keys, burled wood, and decorations of inlaid metals and stone. It takes two very large men and a dolly to move it around. Love it, love it! We've moved it from Texas to Colorado to Northern Virginia to California as my husband was transferred. Neither of our children want it when we go. Pity.
