Great advice. It is too easy to get caught up in trends. I know I don't have the voice for paranormal, YA or historical. I am a Contemporary Writer all the way. If I tried to write to what is "hot" the results would be as uncomfortable as trying to fit my mother-of-two body into a pair of skinny jeans.

LOL, nice analogy, Kristina, and so true!

I'm in a critique group with seven other writers. We all met because we entered the same Harlequin contest for unpublished writers targetting Presents, and got chatting online. We are soooo different!

One of us is now multipublished with Presents, and spectacularly prolific.

One has had a couple of full requests from Presents, but hasn't quite cracked it yet, she's also amazingly productive.

One was told by the editors to sub to Sweet not Presents, had a full requested there, and now, in a 180 degree turn, is targetting Blaze with wonderfully original and sexy stories. She writes slow but perfect first draft.

Another is waiting to hear back on a requested full from Presents, but is writing a single title in the meantime.

One has given up on writing for a while after a rejection, but oh, how I hope she comes back to writing, she has too good a talent to waste.

Another decided Presents wasn't the line for her, and is targeting Medicals, plus she has a wickedly funny single title she's pitching to agents.

And then there's me, easily the least naturally talented of the group! With all those amazing writers around me, it's all too easy to feel inadequate and question my individual style when I compare myself to them. It's even worse reading SuperRomamances and comparing what I'm writing with the standard needed to be published!

The reassuring thing is that every one of us feels the same. Comparisons are pointless and serve no purpose except to depress us, because no-one can write the story we can.

That's what I try to remind myself, anyway!
