I have a confession to make, I like bad guys. The kind of bad men that can't be called boys. A real bad-ass hero with a black eye-patch. Ever since Kurt Russell Escaped from New York in the guise of Snake Plisskin, I've been hooked on those one-eyed bandits.
WARRIOR is spelled with one "I" for a reason. Yeah, it's a groaner.
These guys have been though the battle, but they still have some fight left in them. The only thing they lack is their depth perception and peripheral vision. But they make up for that loss of sight with their super powers--sheer grit and determination.
They're not easy to love. Because they tend to hide behind that black armor. But they're worth getting to know. What they lack in vision they make up for with the ability to see straight to the soul.
So tell me are you into good guys or bad guys?
Snake Plissken or Captain Ron?
Rooster Cogburn then or now?
Cowboys or Native American Indians?
Cops or Robbers?
Reversed.
Depp as the robber, Bale as the cop.
Werewolves or Vampires?
Ironman or Captain America?
Okay, these guys are super heroes, but real bad-ass super heroes.
I will be giving away 3 autographed copies of Mitzi's Marine where you can catch a glimpse of Hatch a bad ass ex-Navy SEAL with a black eye patch before his own story Marry Me, Marine, comes out in February 2012. This is a marriage of convenience story between a single mom who wants desperately to join the Marines and an ex-Navy SEAL struggling bitterly with being medically discharged after losing an eye in Iraq. Needless to say he’s not too happy being the stay at home Manny while the wife goes off to war.
If you've already read Mitzi's Marine (obviously I'm not going to make you wait for Marry Me, Marine--I'm too forgetful for one thing), I'll be happy to substitute the Harlequin Treasury download of SEAL It With A Kiss or a current Superromance of your choice.

Rogenna, I love an eyepatch! I did some development work on a potential new TV show here in Australia a couple of weeks ago, and I lobbied for what was possibly a quite embarrassing amount of time for our sexy hero to have an eye patch. No one else was feeling the eye patch love, however, and I had to let it go. But the passion for the patch lives on in my heart, never fear!
Not so sure about the eyepatch. Can I take Harrison Ford as either Han Solo or Indiana Jones?? I love a reluctant hero!
Oh man. I must confess that I've only seen the John Wayne movie way back when. I read for entertainment.
I do love heroes with rough edges that can be smoothed a little bit by the heroine. I knew someone with an eye patch and he wasn't a bad guy so I sort of relate to him when I see one. I know all eye patches are not created equal but they are fairly rare so that's my point of reference.
Seriously, Sarah? And what a cool backstory you could have given that hero. Obviously you're a woman of taste. Women loved Patch on Days of our Lives.
Ah, the reluctant hero, Scarlet. Yes, I definitely would go for Harrison Ford in just about any role, but really love those character roles.
So if you had to choose one would it be into the future or back to the past?
Han Solo or Indiana Jones?
Well, Kaelee, let me tell you we LOVE readers here :) And I drifted off while watching the new True Grit so I can't give a full review.
Not that I didn't think it was a good movie...
I was just too tired to care, I guess--lol.
Anyway, yes, a rough edged hero, smoothed by the heroine is a nice take on bad boys. And truth be told I've never met anyone with an actual eye patch. Though I was recently patched for two days after eye surgery and that wasn't much fun.
Afterward though I could see again. Before that the vision in my right eye had gotten so bad I took out the rightside mirror of my car while backing out of my garage :(
In my heroes case he has an eye collection that he covers up. And hates big city driving. Even though he has a divers license and extra wide mirrors to compensate.
Hi Rogenna. I have always liked bad boys. They keep you on the edge of your seat. ;)
Hi Rogenna,
I like them both, so I will take Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Daniel Day- Lewis from your list.
I also want Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Gerard Butler in Lara Croft Tomb Raider and Dennis Quaid in The Big Easy.
I do like movie bad boys a bit more, but I like good guys more in real life.
Anonymous Tammy Y today
Yes, crystal there is that. And, I think, because as women we think we can tame them :)
Mmm, Tammy I do like how you've made a menu out of the guys on display :) I felt a little guilty for putting the Twilight twins up on the list because they are so young.
But that's for all you young readers out there. And while I'm commenting, oh my, young adult is so much sexier than when I was growing up.
I'm not sure, so I'm going to try out each bad boy on your list... Oh, wait, I think I was daydreaming. My "bad boy" is a fencer, so he battles with a sword on a regular basis. So I guess I prefer the bad ones--just the way they are.
PS I loved Mitzi's Marine.
I've been a Kurt Russell fan forever, it seems, eye patch or not. I remember him from The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, even. It's funny, though, I think I only caught a short segment of Escape from NY years ago, yet the Snake Plisskin character was very memorable -- more memorable than most. Not only do I remember the name consistently, whereas I'm lucky to remember the protagonists names from movies very long regardless of how much I like them, but references to the character keep cropping up. I do think that Kurt rocks his eye patch better than most.
As for bad boys, I'm all in favor of them in fiction because they are almost always really good people underneath the tough, protective bad-boy demeanor, especially once the right woman comes into their lives. In real life, not so much because it seems to me that the bad boys tend to stay bad boys, with a few exceptions.
I love a bad boy. I recently watched the remake of the western 3:10 to Yuma, and loved Russell Crowe's bad guy, one of the roughest characters I've ever seen him play and an instant favorite.
Mary, I always wanted to take up fencing.
Hmm, black eye patch, fencing. I guess I really have a thing for pirates :)
Ahh, Russell. He aged so well. And lives here in Colorado. JV, assuming you've seen the movie Overboard with Kurt and Goldie. That's one of my go to movies whenever I want a good romantic comedy.
Hi Summer,
I'd forgotten about that movie. Kurt Russell is a good roughed up character. I also like his movie Solider.
I found this top 20 Kurt Russell movies on youtube.

Thanks, Mary for the compliment on Mitzi's Marine.
I love the bad boys very much. Only in my books, though. ;)
Mitzies' Marine was a great read. I'll take Hans Solo.. oh, yeah. Hang him on my wall.
Claudia, you are so right. Bad boys are much easier to fix in fiction than in real live. But I do love reading them :)
Thanks, Linda ;)
And I now have this image of a carbon dated Han Solo hanging from your wall.
PRINCESS LEIA: I love you.
HAN SOLO: I know.
--Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Since we're all into Han Solo I thought I'd share this list from a site called top10-best.com

Look, I ain't in this for your revolution, and I'm not in it for you, princess. I expect to be well paid. I'm in it for the money.
--HAN SOLO, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
#9
HAN SOLO:You like me because I'm a scoundrel. There aren't enough scoundrels in your life.
PRINCESS LEIA: I happen to like nice men.
HAN SOLO: I'm a nice man.
--Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Laugh it up, fuzzball!
--HAN SOLO, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon? She's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. She's fast enough for you, old man. What's the cargo?
--HAN SOLO, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
#6
Is that the position of the Jedi Order? What the galaxy needs is one language, one system of measurement, one uniform, one flag? Should we just cut the word no out of the language and substitute Yes sir, right away, sir instead?

Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, farm boy. Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova, and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?

So? What are you going to do, talk me to death?
--HAN SOLO, Fury

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

PRINCESS LEIA: I love you.
HAN SOLO: I know.

Never tell me the odds!
--HAN SOLO, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Great pics! I like them all!
Leia: "I love you"
Han: "I know"
That is solid gold!
Chey,
Glad I could oblige with the eye candy.
I'm not really sure about the eye patch, but I do like those Han Solo quotations. Nice. And I agree with Sarah. That #2 is the bomb!
Sarah, have you never heard the story behind that line?
Lucas wrote it as, "I love you, too."
But felt the line was weak so asked Harrison Ford to improvise the scene.
So here's Han about to be frozen and Leia, being held back shouts, I love you. And his last words to her are, I know. :)
Pure gold is right!
Hi Liz! It's a good think Luke Skywalker turned out to be Princess Leia's brother because he was never a match for Han Solo and his scoundrel ways.
I love the Han Solo quotes too and the story behind it. Didn't know that.
I love Kurt Russell with an eye patch or no eye patch. Overboard was on the other night and I watched it again. Just great.
Don't like eye patches much. Love Han Solo, I'm a goner for the reluctant hero also. Not to into bad guys because most of teh one's I've seen in real life stay that way. Loved John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn character!
I loved "Mitzi's Marine." I like Jeff Bridges so I'll go with his Rooster. I like Captain America and Ironman so I can't choose.
I enjoyed 3;10 to Yuma, but mostly I enjoy sappy/sentimental romances. lol
Ro, don't make me choose, I like them both! But eye patches? Sorry Sarah, too scary. What's under there? Does he take it off in bed? Does the empty socket face you on the pillow?
You gotta love Harrison Ford!
Okay - how about a bad boy who is actually a good guy in disguise? Does that work?
Hi Linda,
I wonder if Overboard is the only movie Kurt and Goldie did together.
Yes, Snookie you are right they are much easier to love in fiction.
Thanks, Jane. Okay, you don't really have to decide between Captain America and Ironman it's your fantasy. You can have both :)
Jackie, Have you seen Something Borrowed? I watched that the other night. And there is one line late in that movie that had me pulling for a guy other than the hero :(
Joan, my hero wears a prosthetic eye under his eye patch :)
Originally, he wore a glass eye with the Navy SEAL trident etched into it (after reading about a real Navy SEAL who had one). But after having to explain it to my editor I nixed all the references to his odd eyeball collection.
Marcie, yes. A bad boy who is good inside is a true hero.
A prosthetic eye would be okay. They're very lifelike. I'm on board now. Pirate-type hero ahoy!
LOL, Joan.
Goodnight, all! Thanks for dropping by today :)
I could happily take good guys & bad from your list. Let's face it neither are absolute angels or devils.
So true, Marybelle :)
Rogenna,
No. According to imdb.com, they made three movies together (Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn), The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968) and (1984) before Overboard (1987).
Ooops! I don't know what happened to the name of the second movie in the previous post. It was Swing Shift (1984).
You are ALL bringing a smile to my face today. Many thanks!

Yeah, JV. I remember Swing Shift. I think I'm going to have to pop some popcorn and have a Kurt and Goldie night real soon.
Laney, thank you and for your technical assistance :)
