Writing Tip of the Week

"Habit is your friend. It takes 30 days to make something part of your routine, so write every day at the same time. Soon, you'll find yourself showing up at the keyboard even on the bad days."

I thought I'd have all this extra time to write while my kids were home from school. Instead we traveled, watched too many movies and generally let the days get away from us.

I am looking forward to them going back to schoo in a few weeks and we can re-establish our routines of working on homework in the afternoons.

Treat it just like the day job - you have to show up to get paid - is my motto!

Great advice! I've actually managed to stick to getting up at 5am so I have an hour to write on work days.On a really bad day, I might hit snooze and only have 50 minutes, but at least I'm writing everyday. And then because I'm into the story, I usually also write on the train.

The worst thing is, trying to write on days off. It's crazy that I should write more on days I'm out of the house for fourteen hours, but that seems to be how it is. Weekends I'm catching up on housework, blogs like this, sewing, and spending time with family, and I never seem to make that writing time.

Maybe I need to start getting up at 5am on the weekend too...

Thanks, Marybelle. A thank you Super authors for giving away the critique.

Writing at a regular time is really important for me. I have learned to just sit down and write, no matter how I feel, or what is going on in my life.

I don't think that I could write at 5am, Autumn. I'm an owl, not a lark. I'm often still up at midnight writing and that works for me.

Great post. Doing writing challenges that *force* you to write each day really makes all the difference for me. I did a May 50K challenge, and while I didn't get 50K, I did write every day that month, and now here it is August and I have done *something* with my WIP every single day this summer. Daily makes all the difference. Don't think I could wake up at 5am though! My baby still wakes up too much at night for that!

I agree with the 30days habit. When you keep doing the same thing everyday it will be part of your system. So we need to choose the right thing to do everyday before it become permanently part of our everyday life.
