RT...part two (and more prizes)

RT...part two (and more prizes)

by Debra Salonen

When I read Tracy’s blog yesterday, I had a moment of confusion (not all that unusual for me). In my head, I heard a voice say, “When did I write that?”

I didn’t. Tracy did. But I’d intended to write about my recent RT Book Reviews conference experience and was quite surprised to see this title appear the day before my scheduled blog.

Luckily, our experiences were different, even if our topic is the same. (Although Tracy has better pics. New camera, old husband. Not my fault, of course.)

Let me begin by saying this was not my first RT Conference. I’ve attended several over the years and each time was different, depending on where I was in my career. That, in my opinion, is the beauty of RT. People from many diverse genres, at all stages of their careers--from the possible-maybe stage of thinking about writing a book someday...to the “Pioneers of Romance Fiction” with fifty-plus books to their credit--come

together for four days to celebrate BOOKS.

Last Thursday, I joined the fun to pick up the Reviewer’s Choice Award for “Best Superromance of 2010”. My one good picture:

Since the conference was in Los Angeles, I was lucky enough to be able to drive there from my home in northern California, accompanied by my husband, Paul. He’s no stranger to writing conferences, but this was his first RT. Hero that he is, he drove through rain, sleet, a 6-car pile-up on Highway-99, a miles-long parking lot of eight lanes of traffic at a stand-still, my lousy navigational skills and STILL got me to the hotel with ten minutes to spare.

Unfortunately, I’d registered too late to stay at the conference hotel, so we had to walk four blocks to the reception...in heels (me, not my hubby) straight into an icy, gale-force wind that completely rearranged my hairdo and gave strangers a glimpse up my dress. After procuring my official name tag badge, we rushed to the second floor, shadowing two New York Times best-selling authors to find the right room, then grabbed a couple of chairs directly behind...OMG...could it be? Yes, it was...”Catherine Coulter,” I gushed in a thready whisper to my husband.

“Catherine Who?” he asked in his usual shout.

Naturally, the Catherine in question (http://www.catherinecoulter.com) turned around.

(Catherine Coulter...that handsome guy behind her looking at the camera is my sweet hubby.)

So, I squeaked in one of those voices that usually come from animals in cartoons, “Hello. You won’t remember me, but my name is Debra Salonen. We met years and years ago at my very first conference. I was so green I didn’t even dare whisper aloud that I might someday dream of becoming a writer, but you, very kindly, very generously, gave me your card and said if I ever had any questions I could write you.” (This was long before email.)

(And, yes, I did write her and she did reply with encouragement and a few tips; and no, I don’t still have the letter. I wish I did.)

My idol replied, “I do remember you. And, now, you’re here accepting an award. Isn’t that wonderful?” Again, she was very kind and generous and gracious. She asked me about my work, my experiences in series fiction and my current projects.

The program started a few moments later and our conversation ended. Catherine Coulter was accepting two awards: an honorary “Pioneer of Romance Fiction” award and the 2010 Mystery, Suspense & Thriller Award Award Winner. Throughout the lovely ceremony and many acceptance speeches, I was struck by several common threads: gratitude to RT for celebrating a love of books, gratitude to the reviewers who celebrate the books they love with genuine and sincere appreciation, and gratitude to the readers who wholeheartedly support this genre that they love.

RT--both the conference and the magazine--fosters a strong sense of community. And once a year, readers, writers, librarians, publishers and booksellers come together to bond in person over craft, words, books, art and the celebration of story.

We also bump into old friends--here's C.J. Carmichael and me.

It was so good to see my friend Olivia Gates accept her award for Best Desire of 2011. She lives in Egypt and in her acceptance speech she praised and thanked the romance community for supporting her during this time of national crisis and upheaval.

Occasionally, we run into members of our local RWA chapters, such as the warm and wonderful Donna O'Brien who is also an acquiring editor for Crescent Moon Press. www.crescentmoonpress.com

When we venture out of our writer comfort zones, we sometimes are required to speak in public...or attempt to. (I'll spare you the video of my acceptance speech, but if you're truly curious--and want to be reassured that you can do better--you'll find the link on my personal blog www.debrasalonencom/bookclub.)

Then, if we’re lucky, after it's all said and done,

we head to the beach to fish, hunt for sea glass, relax with a glass of wine

and, of course, read a good book.

I would be pleased to share my RT bounty with two lucky respondents to this blog. Here are some of the titles in my RT goodie bag. I wish I had time to read them all:

STARFIRE by Kate Douglas

BARELY A LADY by Eileen Dreyer

WICKED INTENTIONS by Elizabeth Hoyt

POISONED KISSES by Stephanie Draven

and THE HELLION BRIDE by Catherine Coulter

You may pick one of these award-winning novels PLUS one of my titles, including RETURN TO THE BLACK HILLS or A FATHER’S QUEST. Good luck and happy reading!

Even though Tracy wrote on the same subject yours was very different from hers. I enjoy reading about what goes on at conferences like this one. And I always enjoy seeing pictures. Sounds like you had a wonderful time there even if you did barely make it on time.
And as usual since I already have your books don't enter me in the drawing.

That's a lovely pile of books & very generous of you.

Thanks Deb, I always enjoy pictures like these ones. It lets me live a moment with some of my favorite authors.

Hi Deb--I didn't have a moment to respond on the eHarlequin thread yesterday, but what I would have said was, "I want more RT!" I'm so glad you didn't change your topic. :-)

I've never been to this convention and I'm fascinated. I love the photos--you look fabulous. Your award is gorgeous. Way to go!

Your Catherine Coulter story is so cool. I'm impressed you had the guts to follow through with the letter to her. I wonder what questions you asked?

You know which amazing author was sweet and welcoming to me at my first RWA conference? Deb Salonen. I've never forgotten it. ;-)

Thanks for sharing your experience and your photos.

Take care!

Enjoyed your blog. What fun the conference must have been.

Hi Deb-
congrats on your beautiful and well deserved award. Thanks for sharing your story and these great pictures.

Debra Salonen said...

EllenToo, I was thinking of you when I added those other books to the mix. Surely there's one in there you might like to read... :-) And, once again, let me thank you for reviewing both of my new books! Truly appreciate the support.

Marybelle, you're welcome. Good luck in the drawing.

Beth, next year RT is Chicago. Isn't that your area? Or am I confused...as usual?

Kaelee, I have to admit, I love to see other people's travel pics. Is that wierd? People always joke about boring their friends and neighbors with slides from their last trip, but I enjoy it. Thanks.

Ellen, that's the sweetest thing you've ever said to me. I feel all mushy and happy.

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

Thanks, Gloria. It was a bit too fast, but life has been spinning like that lately. I forgot to mention that I also ran into Tara Taylor Quinn and hubby Tim, who both signed their new book for me!!! Way cool. But we were so busy talking, I forgot to take a photo. sigh.

Congrats on your award, Debra! I loved Until He Met Rachel. And your story of the RT conference was great and very enjoyable!

Mary Brady said...

Hey, Deb, sounds like you had a ball! And I see you, too, put eye candy in your blog--that handsome guy. That is also a beautiful award. Congrats!

Linda Henderson said...

Beautiful award and very well deserved. I always enjoy hearing about the conferences, it sounds like a fun experience.

JV said...

Congratulations, Deb! I think it's very cool that authors receiving awards for their work can still be awe-struck in the presence of authors who've been their role-models and favorites. Sounds like a great time, minus the cold, gale-force winds!

Debra Salonen said...

Thank you, Claudia. Always nice to hear someone loved your book. See me smiling. :-)

Oh, Mary, I'm torn now. Do I tell my hubby you called him "eye candy" or not? It might make his head swell and he's wearing all that protective gear for weed-whacking at the moment. LOL. Maybe later. He'd doing such a good job trimming the yard I don't dare risk it. ;-)

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

Thank you, Linda. Conferences are always fun. I'll never forget my first RT. I was walking down a hallway in the hotel and encountered a group of "Mr. Romance" cover models. I think I ran straight into a wall. LOL. They were all courting votes so they were super, super friendly.

I don't know if RT still has that event or not? Tracy might know.

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

JV, the gale force wind was not fun. This was downtown L.A. with canyons created by skyscrapers and dirt and sand blowing everywhere. My eyes felt like pure grit by the time we got inside.

But the next morning when we walked to the hotel to have breakfast with C.J., the sun was out, the sky was bright blue and there wasn't a lick of wind!

Debra Salonen said...

Desere, you are sooo good for my ego. My head is swelling. Good thing I'm safely inside and not wearing protective head gear.

Seriously, it's always a warm and delicious feeling to hear from readers who felt connected, deeply and passionately, to one of your books. It's humbling, too, because you can't intentionally tug on those heartstrings--that never works--so you know whatever it is that made that connection comes from a much deeper source.

Your very welcome Debra I cant tell you how much your nice comment means to me your very sweet and a really brilliant author who knows just how to connect with us !

Deb, I'm glad you shared your experience at the RT conference too! Different perspectives are always nice. Love the way you framed the picture of your award :) It's gorgeous, makes me want to go out to the beach! Your other pictures are not so bad either. I think it's pretty cool that your hubbie went with you :)

Deb ~ sorry I'm so slow answering your question but a friend and her husband took me out to eat for my birthday. Now I am stuffed. Anyway I haven't read any of the books you listed but I would hate to deprive anyone one of your books.

Debra Salonen said...

Snookie, it's hard to ruin a shot of the beach. I'm really lucky to have such generous friends. And, yes, having my husband along made it sooo much more special. Plus, he drove!!! I hate traffic.

Helen, I repeat..next year Chicago! Let's go.

Cathy M, I was babbling...truly...but Catherine was so cool, calm, humble, polished...everything I want to be when I grow up. ;-)

Deb, I've been reading about RT on various sites and it sounds like a lot fun. Will definitely have to put it on my wish list. Thanks for the insight.

Happy birthday, Ellen

Thanks Tammy and Karina

Debra Salonen said...

Ginny, LOL on the Marilyn moment. Here's hoping mine went un-photographed. ;-) Glad you enjoyed traveling with me. I used to write actual travel stories for the newspaper where I worked. People would stop me on the street and ask, "Where are we going next? I can't wait." Budget cuts and falling circulation put an end to that fun.

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

Jane, Olivia is such a warm and delightful person. I adore her and we were all so worried about her safety. She's doing well, but I don't think any of us can fully comprehend how difficult it would be to watch the country you love change so radically. Things might be better for some, but not for everyone, and the news only tells us part of the story. I'm sure she'd appreciate your continued prayers and good wishes.

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

Thanks, Chey. Glad you dropped by.

Nas, I hope it was okay to include this link in your blog. I've really enjoyed myself this week at your blog. Thanks so much for doing the interview. Your followers are superb!!!

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

Thank you, donnas! Readers have a great time at RT, too.

Oh, and BTW, I spotted a video on FB of the Mr. Romance contest, so it's a comfort to know that is still going on. It's a hoot!!!

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

Karina, it's probably hard to justify the travel to attend all the wonderful conferences around when you live so far away. I don't make them all...ahem, like I'm not going to RWA this summer...because even for me (traveling inside the United States) the cost can be too much.

But if you ever happen to be in the States when RT is going on, then definitely make the effort. It's a lot of fun.

Ellen, I'm glad to know I'm not very late in my birthday wishes. You could change your FB profile to include the day of your birth. I don't tell anybody the year...LOL.

Deb, congrats again on your very deserved award! The photo you took of it deserves an award, too. Very nicely set up and shot. And while I'm handing out awards, here's one to your dh for his driving skills. :)

Happy Birthday, Ellen!

Deb,

Congratulations again on the RT award. I too am glad you didn't change your topic. I kept the blog open on my desktop today at work and I kept getting interrupted when I wanted to read it.

Finally, I get home and get to read it. I've only been to one RT conference and it was wonderful. Until my next one I'll have to live vicariously through you and Tracy .

liztalley said...

So enjoyed seeing both your and Tracy's perspectives on RT. Loved the award. So pretty! And I loved seeing your pics. Sounds like you had a great time. And Catherine Coulter? Yeah, I'd have been giddy, too. Man, I loved her books. Read them throughout high school and college. Think I still have a few on the shelf :)

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Deb- (maybe my third post will be the charm)
Congrats on your beautiful and well deserved award. Thanks for sharing your story and these great pictures. You all look like you had a great time.

Debra Salonen said...

Thanks to my wonderful fellow SuperAuthors! You're all so busy, but you make time to pop in say hello. You're the best.

Joan, I'll tell Paul he's a hit with all the women. That will please him no end. :-)

Linda, I keep saying the same thing about Desert Dreams. Gotta make that one of these years. You're going to have a blast at RWA. I heart NY, but NINC coincides with my anniversary so I can bring Paul again. (Yes, I needed a driver. Shhh. Don't tell him that.)

Ro, I couldn't change my topic...I didn't have another one.

Liz, I loved Catherine Coulter's historicals and was a little surprised when she started writing suspense, but, man, those were great, too. And she was very funny, too. Made us all laugh when she excepted her award.

Deb

Debra Salonen said...

Hi, Virginia. I agree completely. If you're making the effort to attend a conference, you darn well better have fun! I did!

Good luck in the drawing. You all know you're registered for the Tax Relief, too, right? I'm so excited about that. Can't wait to find out who wins.

Oh, sorry, I was channeling Randy Jackson for a moment. American Idol just got over and I'm going to bed.

Jo'sDaughter, I sent Ms. Coulter an email yesterday with a link to this blog. She very sweetly thanked me and said she enjoyed the write up. What really surprised me was she said that was her first RT, but she enjoyed it greatly and they treated her like royalty and she was pleased to have bumped into me again.

Cool, huh? I'm still smiling.

Thank you, Jackie, for trying again. Sorry Blogger failed you. Good luck with the drawing. OMG, the big one is tomorrow. fingers crossed, everyone.

And, yes, Patricia, it's easy to be star-struck in this business. The first "big name" author (I'd been reading her books for years at that point) who sought me out to say she loved my book was Roz Denny Fox. I will never forget that feeling.
