We brought in the new year for the calendar - we partied and celebrated, toasted, kissed loved ones, offered good wishes and made resolutions. Or we did as my aunts did and slept through the ticking of the clock that signified another new beginning. Either way, we made it to 2011 - but just because the calendar has been celebrated and satisfied, doesn't mean the party has to end.
To me, and for a lot of us here at SuperRomance, the real party, the true celebration, isn't in a counting of days, but in real life living - in making the most out of every single day. To that end, we're starting the new year with a huge Party!!! We're gathering here at the brand new SuperRomance Authors Blog to celebrate life and living - the things we write about.
I knew from the time I was in high school that I was going to write for Harlequin some day. And when I read the very first rendition of a SuperRomance - published by another Harlequin imprint - Worldwide Library - I knew that I wanted to write for SuperRomance. I read every single SuperRomance title that came out under the Worldwide imprint. And when the imprint switched to Harlequin, I read every single one of those titles, too.
I couldn't get enough of the longer, more layered and intricate stories. SuperRomance was everything good about Harlequin Books - the books spoke of the same hope and joy and ultimate strength that embodies true love - and they made those commodities readily available to me, in real life - in my life. They weren't fantasy. They were living in the deepest truest sense - the heroes and heroines that came to life on the pages of SuperRomance novels lived life as I wanted to live it. They were an inspiration to me - a promise that the true love I believed in - a love that is strong enough to heal the deepest hurts, to overcome the highest hurdles - really did exist in every day living.
My way wasn't easy. I didn't just write a book and sell it. I wrote many of them. And had them rejected. Multiple times. Over a period of years. I met the senior editor of SuperRomance at a conference in 1989. I think that my determination, my belief that I really was going to write for SuperRomance one day - a quiet and strong knowing, not an egotistical load of spouting off - spoke to her. Over the next couple of years she kindly read my work. The stories still got rejected, but the letters of denial were long and technical - they were filled with valuable information pertaining to the craft of writing. I devoured them, grateful for every single tidbit.
And in 1992, I got THE call. Harlequin SuperRomance was on the phone, asking me if I'd sell them my book. Very calmly, I told the editor I would. I listened as she gave me some practical details. I agreed to them. I hung up the phone. And I screamed until my throat hurt. My daughter was six at the time. I can still remember the look on her face as she stood there watching me release more than six years of pent up determination and energy. We went to Burger King to lunch to celebrate.
I've written more than forty SuperRomance novels in the nineteen years that followed that phone call. I'm writing for MIRA books now, too - mainstream suspense novels. I've written novellas. And in April of 2011, I will see the publication of my own true life love story from HCI books. (It Happened on Maple Street.) 2011 also brings another SuperRomance title, Full Contact (8/11). And my work in progress is a back to back trilogy of SuperRomance. Because no matter where I go, or what I do, SuperRomance is a part of me. These are stories of life.
Life isn't easy. Writing isn't easy. Publishing gets harder and harder. But for me, every single day that I get up with a story in my head, with fingers that can type and a keyboard that works, is a day to party.
I hope you'll join us here at the SuperRomance Authors Blog this week. We're giving away lots of free books, sharing life and living, and starting the new year off in the most perfect way possible. And tomorrow, Tuesday, January 4th, we're bringing you a very special treat. Wanda Ottewell, Senior Editor of SuperRomance, will be here, celebrating with us - and you.
So come on SuperRomance lovers. What does SuperRomance mean to you???

Hi, Tara! Happy New Year! What a wonderful post--I loved hearing your own personal story of your love affair with SuperRomance : )
I adore “SuperRomances”–the longer-length format gives the author lots more room to develop the characters and the story line. I have read many, many “SuperRomances”, and I’ve never been disappointed. I’ve been touched, surprised, amused, intrigued and delighted. So many talented storytellers in the “SuperRomance” authors group!

Tara, welcome! Hearing your story was like hearing my own. Reading WorldWide books from the time I was 11. Always knowing that one day... Only when that day came we went to McDonalds after I got the call.
Thanks for starting us off. Don't be shy people. We're glad you're here!
Super Romances include some of my favorite authors. What really struck me about your post is how consistent you have been with your career. Wow. That's a lesson for me as a new author.
Congratulations Super Authors on the launch of your Super blog!!
Good morning. What an inspiring post! The SuperRomances are one of my favorite lines, also. I must admit that I have to stagger reading them with books from one of the lighter romance lines simply because the SuperRomances make me feel so deeply and really bombard my emotions. It's a good thing. :)

I enjoy Superromances because of the longer length although I miss the 304 page length and the focus on real life themes.
Thank you for sharing your pre-publishing story! It's just the inspiration I needed after struggling with my writing lately. I grew up reading Harlequin Historicals but began my SuperRomance obsession after I went through a rough divorce. The emotional and realistic plots keep me hooked!!
Tara--what a great story. I knew I wanted to write for Superromance after I read a wonderful book by Kathleen O'Brien. (The Homecoming Baby.) I recognized the kind of story I wanted to tell about real people struggling with intense emotional situations. Reading her book felt like coming home to me. (Imagine my joy when I got to meet Kathleen a few years ago!)
I'm thrilled about the new blog! It's going to be a Super year. ;-)

While Superromances were not the first Harlequin books I read I got hooked on them when I read my first one and I have been reading them for a long time. I love them because of their real life stories. I can always depend on it being a story that could happen to an ordinary person about an ordinary family.
It's really great to see so many of you here this morning. I wanted to remind everyone that we will be giving away a complete set of Tara's The Chapman Files. The winner will be drawn from among those who comment today.
The series starts with a SuperRomance The 1st Wife. The 2nd Lie, The 3rd Secret and The 4th Victim are all Mira books. Tara did you find Supers to be a good bridge for working across the two lines?
And how did you come up with the idea to mix bigamy and intrigue into such an emotionally gripping seris?
I love SuperRomances because they feel real - but still have a happy ending. The characters deal with real problems and they don't make a big deal out of little things just to create conflict. I love reading them work through things together!
Yay! Look at our new digs! And wow Tara for kicking off the launch with such an inspiring story! I loved it. I think writers who are meant to be authors all share that single-minded determination to find success, which is why Tara's story resonates so deeply! Awesome stuff. I'm proud to be a part of this amazing group!
Awesome post, Tara! I needed a little cheerleading to get motivated...shhh, don't tell my editor. ;-)
So lovely to see many of our regular eHarlequin friends here. This new format feels very energized, doesn't it? Ro, you did an amazing job getting this set up. Kudos, my friend!
Deb
SO glad to see this blog! And this post is exactly what I needed to get back on track. Supers have always spoken to me too. Thank you Tara, for sharing.
Great post, Tara. I still have the first TTQ SuperRomance I ever read, back in the 90s, tucked away in my book box, because I was determined to write a story that good.
I love SuperRomance because they are stories about real people, real romance. My journey to Supers happened in an odd way. I read mostly Intrigues during the 90s and when I wrote, there was usually some kind of a mystery angle. My husband only knew that I was trying to write romance. One day I got a package in the mail from the Harlequin Readers Club and it contained SuperRomance introductory copies. I had no idea why I'd received the books, until my husband told me he'd filled out a card and mailed it in. He never did things like that, and I'll always remember him saying, "The rest is up to you." I was so touched that he understood my need to write and that he chose this way to show that he supported it. I read the first book -- by Roz Denny Fox -- and was hooked. When I started pursuing publication, I had only one target--Supers.
It's so great to be part of such a wonderful group of writers, readers and editors! Go Supers!
Happy New Year!!
This sounds like it is going to be a fun blog!
Great launch post, Tara. What I love about Super is the range and diversity of stories and voices in the line. Every one unique and yet with that Super promise of a great book.
Karina
Stunning launch post !! Thank you for getting so many of my favorite authors all in one place !!
All the best

Glad I found this blog....going to be a fun one I'm sure! I love Super 'cause it holds my attention. Thanks!
jackie.smithATdishmailDOtnet
Great post, Tara. And a great launch for Supers. Party on!
Linda
I sure am glad to have found this blog and become a follower!
And Tara, your post is inspirational regarding the determination. Thank you so much.
I love Supers because of the intense storylines and the feel of reality to them.
Thanks for being here everyone! I was recently working with a non-fiction editor at a non-fiction house who has just become acquainted with romance authors. She is amazed at our community, stating that the authors that she deals with are usually competitive and non-friendly with each other. I take our community for granted, I guess. But I also very much appreciate that it's here. We who read and write romance understand the basic fact of life - that love is the most important part of living. Sometimes, the only cure for what ails us, and always the only way to ultimate happiness. With that knowing, we come together to share with each other, and the world, the true key to happiness. I am very very thankful I am a part of you all.
Ro, I don't really know the answers to your questions! I didn't set out to bridge anything or to tie anything together. I was minding my own business, telling my stories as they came to me, and my editors pulled out of my work the directions I was heading in. I wish I could say I had a master plan, but I honestly didn't. I just opened up to the stories, talked with my editor about them, and because she loved them, too, I set about writing them.
Wonderful post!
Why do i love Supers? They deliver. They deliver a great, intense, real story and almost never let me down. I can pick any off the shelf and know I'm in for a great read - how brilliant is that?
What I get out of your answer, Tara is this: You write what you love and it shows. Great job!
Hello everyone, and especially Tara. It was so great reading your story - I always tell anyone who makes the mistake of asking (!) that writing for publication is a marathon, not a sprint. Your endurance and self-belief are very inspiring. And I second your comment about how supportive and empowering the romance writing community is - I think because we all start out as fans of romance novels, we understand the passion we all share and there's commonality there from the get go. It's awesome to be here with everyone - this blog is going to be lots of fun!
Happy New Year. I love that we care about the characters and want them to be happy.
Wonderful post, Tara! I wish I would have thought of going to Burger King to celebrate. Nothing like a Burger and fries to reward the long journey to publication :)
Superromances are particularly dear to me. The first romance I ever read was a Mills and Boon book I filched from my grandmother. It was one of those nurses in a cape and cap looking for love with the doctor who just saved a child kind of books. Then I found the bigger romance book on the shelves of my aunt's used bookstore. Oh, I loved those Superrromances. I read every one of them. Still remember one about a pianist. I couldn't figure out why the heroine had such a thing for his long fingers. LOL. After reading that book I started checking out guys' hands. Still today, it's one of the first things I look at on a guy. :)
I'm so excited about this blog. As Sarah said, it's going to be such fun!
Liz
I like SuperRomance because they are longer stories.
Happy New Year everyone! Tara, thanks for kicking us off with a bang. In my early days before I sold, my mantra was, 'persistence pays off.' I think every writer knows the hard lonely slog to complete and sell a book. And another book. And another. Even though writing stories is what we love to do, the writing community, and contact with readers, plays such an important role in helping keep us inspired and motivated. I just know this blog is going to be a wonderful Superromance 'community.'
I'll admit to only having read a few Super Romances in my life but I'm only 25 LOL so I hope I have a lot of time to catch up. I think the longer the story the better so I probably should start reading a few more of your books ;-)
I see that you guys are a friend of Seekerville where I spend A LOT of my free time so if this is anything like that community it should be a blast! Best wishes on the new blog!
XOXO~ Renee C.
Thank you for sharing Tara! I haven't read a whole lot of Super Romances but I love how Harlequin has a line for everyone. The last Super Romances I read was The Last Night in Texas & The Best Laid Plans. I really enjoyed the books and will have to check out some more.
I recently rediscovered an old box of Harlequin books I'd been keeping becuase I'd loved them so much. I'd forgotten I had it and when I opened it up found it full of Supers. I guess I hadn't realised how long I had been reading and loving the line for! Not a surprise I suppose that this is the line I'm aiming for with my writing.
I started reading Supers in 2007. Something about the storyline resonated with me more than other lines did.
I remember many years ago my former sister-in-law read part of a story I was working on. She said it sounded like a Harlequin. The only Harlequins I had read previously were Presents (thanks Mom) so I didn't agree with her. It wasn't until I found Supers that I knew I came home.
Marcie - who is having problems posting with her name at the top.
Loved reading about your publishing journey. Great inspiration! :)
Thanks for sharing your inspiring story, Tara! I love Supers because of the depth and variety of the stories we're encouraged to write.
Supers are like a great weekend getaway...you look forward to it, enjoy it like crazy but then its over before you know it and you start thinking about when the next getaway is.
So glad to be re-introduced to Harlequin. I read them years ago but love the new style and sizzle!
I love Superromances! The first Harlequin book that I read was a Superromance. I guess I feel like the Superromance covers everything. When I read a regular series book, it definitely leaves me wanting to know more!
What a great kick-off for the new blog and the New Year!
For me, reading a Super is like reconnecting with old friends and catching up on their lives, one of many reasons I love to read them.
Okay, I'll be in bed before the west coast hits midnight. I hope :) Thank you again, Tara for a great first blog.
Our winner for Tara's The Chapman files will be drawn from today's comments. Look for your name in the weekend edition of our blog.

p.s. come back tomorrow for Wanda's post and a chance to win a 6-pack of Supers! We've got this going on all month long! Every one who commented today (except our authors, of course) is eligible for the AmazonKindle drawing. See the contest page for details.
I started reading HR and HP but when I discovered HSR I found books that gave me just that bit more with heroes and heroines who could live next door to me and problems that made me laugh and cry. A lot of Super Romance authors are on my auto buy list.
I love Super Romance stories. The romances are so intense and the emotions so real, so powerful. I always get completely absorbed in those worlds and hate to see them end.
Great post, Tara!
Superromance packs an intense, emotional read into a relatively short page count. They're my favourite Harlequin books because they feature stories about people like me. While they provide a romantic escape from reality, they're more rooted in normalcy than some of the other lines.
Great Blog! I love super romance because they are heart felt books. They are real and really speak to the reader. As a reader and an aspireing writer I can't wait to see what you bring us with this blog!
Coming in late but what an inspirational post Tara!! Thanks for sharing! I love Superromances because of their REAL factor! Give me a nice normal bloke over a prince or sheik any day :)
Once again thank you for this great blog I love SuperRomance !!
Happy New Year! SuperRomance means stories about real women in real situations to me.
Supers are books about the heart. Women dealing with relationship issues as they maneuver through their lives. One of the nice things is that I've read almost sweet to sexier Supers, from suspenseful to almost inspirational Supers. I love the variety.
SuperRomances are more real to me. The characters seem like real people in real situations.
Hi Tara and Happy New Year. I loved your post. It was so inspirational. I admire your positive dedication. And happy you were so determined as we can all now read your books. :) I enjoy Superromance because the characters and the stories are so true to life.

Congrats on the Blog..
Happy New Year!
So many reasons ... so little time. Suffice to say I have read Superromances for years and years.
They aren't over the top, they are believable.
They aren't too long in length; they're just right for finishing up in one sitting.
They keep me reading, page by page, as quickly as possible; but they don't keep me up all night reading.
They give me good thoughts; and I get great dreams in return. You see, the best thing (for me) is to read a book right before bedtime, and then I can imagine that I am the heroine of the story. It doesn't take long before I'm having sweet dreams!
